Prince William and Kate’s Second Anniversary

Image

I remember Will and Kate’s wedding on April 29, 2011 at Westminister Abbey. I was a first year student at Bard Early College Queens at the time. I woke up at 6am to watch a portion of the wedding on ABC 7, then took a shower and watched some more as I ate my breakfast.

It was 7:25am—five minutes after I was supposed to have left for school.

But they hadn’t kissed yet.

So, naturally, I wanted to skip school. But my mother wasn’t having it.

I proceeded to grab my school bag and rush through the door. Then I realized I had forgotten my keys.

I ran back to get them, ran across the street and then remembered I left my retainer.

That was a pretty hectic spring morning for me.

Nonetheless, I made it to school on time. With 15 minutes to spare!

When I got home I saw pictures of the kiss, so it was all good.

Prince William and Kate celebrated their wedding anniversary on April 26th with a private dinner in London.

How cute!

The six months pregnant Kate Middleton will be ready to blossom in no time!

I cannot wait to see their lovely offspring this summer!

These two are my model couple. Even though my dad thinks it’s stupid, I have a photo of them on my dresser drawer, along with LIGHTS (Valerie Poxleitner), Demi Lovato, and a my best friend at graduation.

I love them as a couple, and I hope one day I can share a romance like their’s with the one that I love.

Happy Anniversary Will and Kate!

This Week in Music: Mike Tompkins’ “Shake the Ground”

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 was a big day for Mike Tompkins.

Why?Shake the Ground

The genius of a musician released his first original single.

ORIGINAL.

NOT A COVER.

For those of you who have yet to meet the Canadian YouTube phenom, I’ll show you what this guy is about:

Yeah. His voice is his instrument. Literally.

He does covers like this regularly. Most of the songs he remixes with his mouth are of the pop genre, including Demi Lovato, Rihanna, and even Owl City.

You can imagine how excited his fans were when they learned of his original single.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to song beats, since he can rely on his own instrumentation. So would he choose a ballad or something fast paced? Heavy base or loud snare? Vocals or instrumental?

I was itching to know. So I went onto Spotify and listened.

And I loved it.

At first I was kind of disappointed. I stared at my computer thinking, no, Mike Tompkins can do way more than just a chorus of “Oh”s and a steady snare.

And then the beat dropped.

He went electronic on us.

Holy crap, that was unexpected!

“Shake the Ground” is a song about what it feels like to be in the party scene, or even on stage, where the flashing lights transform you.

He sings, “Somehow I feel born again tonight.” The feeling of bursting out of your own skin to show the world who you really are shines through in the lyrics of this song.

This song should definitely be on your next party playlist.

“Shake the Ground” probably describes exactly how Mike Tompkins felt when he performed his original song at Playlist Live.

The lyric video features scenes from his performance at Playlist 2013. No word of an official video yet.

Have a listen here. I dare you to challenge his Skrillex-like capabilities!

Episode Review: ‘Awkward.’ 3×3 “A Little Less Conversation” (with Viggle)

During last night’s episode of Awkward., “A Little Less Conversation”, I decided to test out the Viggle app.

Image

I’ll tell you more about the interactive app later.

This episode was a lot less dramatic than the first two of the season. It begins with Jenna and Matty walking through the halls. Jenna’s voice over gives a brief reminder of the fact that Matty still wants to talk about the pregnancy scare.

Tamara and Ming come to the agreement that Matty’s response “Sure, babe”, to all of Jenna’s requests means it’s over. Naturally, Jenna is now afraid to be alone with him, because she fears that he will break up with her after the talk.

This show really lives up to it’s title. After Tamara, Ming, and Jenna finish having their little girl talk, Becca, the evil Asian chick, walks by. In order to abort her suspicions of any lingering romantic feelings between Fred and Ming, Henry slides onto the bench out of nowhere and squeezes Ming’s boob.

What?! Can you say AWKWARD.?

Becca then proceeds to quiz Ming on Henry’s life, just to make sure they’re legit. Her smarts really come in handy during this scene.

Jenna realizes that the only thing that she can do to distract Matty from wanting to talk is seduce him. Her love arts fail miserably, and she leaves the “sanctuary” in despair.

Meanwhile, Sadie suspected of killing Ricky. The principal and my favorite character, Val, the guidance counselor question Sadie, implying that she must have wanted to get back at him for his manwhore-ish behavior. She reminds them that there are also 300 other girls who would want him dead for the same reason, and therefore she should not be the only suspect.

Jenna and Tamara decide to have a BFGFBFF, a date involving couples who are also best friends, so that Jenna won’t have to be alone with Matty on their date. Apparently Tamara has been dreaming of this date since she was a wee little girl.

As Jenna leaves school, Matty offers her a ride, but she refuses. Instead, she pretends to be walking home with the closest person in range, Cece. As Cece gives her weird looks, Matty “sure babes” Jenna yet again after she tells him she’ll see him later tonight. To that Cece goes, “Dude, you just got sure babed.”

Even strangers know things are going downhill for the couple.

The BFGFBFF date is hilarious. The couples spend almost half of the date in the driveway playing musical chairs with the passenger seat so that Jenna will be forced to sit next to Matty. Correction, “Chinese Backseat Firedrill,” as Matty calls it. “No offense.”

The couples end up playing a game of Charades during the date where Jake and Jenna share a memory in order to accurately guess a movie. This upsets Matty even more.

Tamara then suggests that Jenna go with her to the “bathroom, bathroom, bathroom” to discuss their boy trouble. The clever Tamara gets Jenna to realize that the only reason Matty is upset is because she told Jake about the pregnancy scare before telling her own boyfriend. Simple as that. And how does Tamara know this? “Because I’m a communicater. And a little bit psychic,” she says.

I respect Matty for wanting to be a man and talk it out. Too many people go on with their lives suppressing their anger, which only causes them to take it out on the people they love. I hope that viewers take a hint from Matty, especially those in romantic relationships, because as cheesy as it may seem, communication is key to any successful relationship.

The Matty-Jenna confrontation was definitely sappy, but I won’t spoil it for you. Head over to the Awkward. MTV webpage to watch it when it becomes available if you haven’t already!

During the show I decided to use Viggle. I heard about it during a commercial on Monday evening, so I downloaded the app a few hours before watching Awkward. in order to test it out.

The app allows viewers to check into whatever show they are currently watching by hitting the Viggle logo as soon as the app opens. The app listens to the television as the characters speak in order to determine which show you are watching. Connect the app to Facebook and Twitter to share the check-in with friends and followers.

Image

I was unable to share my check in on Twitter for some odd reason, but here is what it looks like on Facebook:

Image

From then on, Viggle allows you to view the Awkward. Facebook, Twitter, IMDb, Wiki, and Amazon Merchandise pages, all via the app. No need to switch to a mobile browser.

Image

Personally, I don’t find much use for an app such as this one. I’ll be deleting it from my phone shortly, because I don’t have that much memory left for apps.

Image

It is great for those annoying commercial breaks though. Click on the Twitter feed for the show to see the outrageous tweets from fans and even the cast of the show.

Image

Image

If Viggle decides to integrate this app when Smart TV becomes more popular, it may definitely take off. I would suggest teaming up the app with Shazam, so that viewers can easily find the soundtrack to each episode.

P.S. Did anyone else see Fred the ninja at the end of the episode?!

Movie Review: ‘Lovestruck: The Musical’

So last night I spent some time sitting on the couch in front of my beloved flat screen to watch Lovestruck: The Musical on ABC Family.

lovestruck

The movie looked promising, featuring actors like Drew Seeley, Chelsea Kane (known as Chelsea Staub pre-2008; still not sure why she changed her stage name) and Jane Seymour.

This film contains high levels of singing, dancing, romance, and beautiful scenery. Those ingredients are all I need to be glued to the television screen for two hours!

The movie starts out with Mirabella (Sara Paxton) rushing to dance class to break the news to her mother, Harper (Jane Seymour), about her decision to quit the show in order to live in Italy with her husband-to-be, Marco. Harper trips on stage during the opening number, “Just Dance”, originally by Lady Gaga, due to her bad knee. She then sends her dancers to find her some aspirin as she goes off to the back room to deal with her daughter.

Here’s where the plot line becomes almost too predictable. Harper is now concerned (as most mothers would be) that her daughter is making a huge mistake. She therefore proceeds to threaten a lawsuit against Mirabella for deciding to quit the show. Mirabella then bans her mother from the wedding, and her mother decides to make it her business to show her that Marco is not the type of guy who will leave his “Playboy” lifestyle for her.

Meanwhile the dancers find Harper not only some aspirin, but a small bottle of Vitality Tonic as well.

We all know what happens next.

Harper gets on a flight to Italy, where the wedding is to take place, messed up knee and all, to then realize that she doesn’t have her aspirin. So what does she do? You guessed correctly: the woman resorts to drinking the Vitality Tonic. The potion turns Harper into her younger self (played by Chelsea Kane), and this gives her all the more advantage in seducing Marco.

The morning after successfully seducing Marco on the night of the bachelor and bachelorette parties, young Harper, who is at this point pretending to be a distant cousin so as not to blow her cover, goes to the bridal shop with Mirabella. After a while she notices that the potion is wearing off, so she rushes back to the house. On the way back, Harper overhears Marco telling his best man about the kiss he shared with her the night before. Unfortunately, Mirabella happens to be walking across the bridge as the conversation between Marco and his best man continues, and she is left to believe three things: her mother was right about Marco, she cannot marry Marco, and her maid of honor, Noelle (Adrienne Bailon), is the girl that turned her fiance unfaithful.

The events of this film are hilarious. The Vitality Tonic only lasts for a certain amount of time, and each time Harper takes a dose, her body reacts weirdly. The first time she drinks the stuff she faints, hyperventilates, and begins blowing into a little baggy, all while in the restroom at the airport in Italy.

I had a good laugh at this movie.

Ok. Now for the things I disliked about this movie:

1. When Mirabella sings “Like a Virgin” along with the rest of the bridesmaids during the bachelorette party, she sounds like a dying baby seal.  Did they forget to do the autotune or something for this girl’s voice?! Young Harper sings it again while seducing Marco and her voice was magical. My God. I don’t know what happened to Sara Paxton during that scene. The rest of her singing parts in other scenes were fantastic though. Just that one damn song! Ugh!

2. Speaking of young Harper seducing Marco, it all happened way too quickly for me. He was supposedly drunk, and just willingly went along with the whole kiss. It seemed a bit unreal.

3. There were not enough scenes where the Italian language was spoken. In fact, there was only one scene where the seamstress calls Mirabella back to have her dress fitted in Italian instead of English. I wanted to hear more of that beautiful language!

And now for the highlights of the film:

1. When Harper’s ex husband, Ryan, arrives, even though she is in younger form, he knows his ex wife is there because of the Chanel No. 5 perfume lingering in the halls. So romantic!

2. The moment I was waiting for: when Harper drugs Ryan with some of the Vitality Tonic so that he won’t blow her cover and he turns into young Ryan, played by Drew Seeley. I think my popcorn bowl was filled with drool at that point.

3. When Harper and Ryan dance to “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” (originally by Usher and Pitbull) at the rehearsal dinner! MUST SEE MOVIE MUSICAL MOMENT!

4. The scenery. Italy is just pure beauty. I totally want to visit one day, and this film reminded me how much I want to go there for my honeymoon when, and if, I get married someday.

And can we all pause for a second just to appreciate how amazing Jane Seymour looks with that blonde bob?!

jane bob

All in all, I think this movie was a crowd-pleaser. The music selection was okay. They could have picked some better pieces, but the dances were definitely well choreographed. Dancing with the Stars surely taught Chelsea Kane a thing or two!

lovestruck soundtrack

Download the soundtrack on iTunes!

I do wish that they had played up the concept of immortality at the end of the film. When Harper is faced with the decision to drink one last dosage of the Vitality Tonic, an action that would turn her into a young adult forever, I began to realize that sometimes the aging process is a part of life that you might not want to give away. Mirabella would never have happened had she chosen to take that third dosage, and this is something I wished were emphasized to a greater degree in the movie.

Best quote from the movie:

“I know that ass, I fell in love with that ass. In fact, I spent the better part of the 80s worshiping that ass.” – Ryan, Harper’s ex husband

Wondering who catches the bouquet? Well I guess you’ll have to watch the movie whenever it airs again on ABC Family to find out!
Enjoy this dance featurette!

Le Divorce: Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries

They’re divorced. Finally.

Image

It only took, what, almost two years, right?

No big deal.

The beautiful ceremony that took place on August 20th, 2011 wasn’t that long ago, I suppose.

Yesterday, April 19th, 2013, Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries settled their divorce. And Kris got nothing from it. Poor guy was scammed into a reality TV marriage with no compensation due to the prenup he signed when they got married. Boo hoo.

As Hollyscoop put it, “Somewhere out there Kris Jenner is sitting in a plastic surgeon’s office and already booking the post-divorce tabloid mag “Tell All.””

I don’t doubt that statement for a second!

I worry about things like this. If the celebrities we look up to can’t even get the whole marriage thing right, where’s the hope for the rest of us?!

I’m not saying that all relationships are meant to last forever. I’m not saying that at all, actually. What I am saying is that two people are supposed to realize that they’re not meant to be together as a couple long term before they get married. Not after.

The “72 day marriage” joke will never get old though. I promise you. That joke will haunt her for the rest of her life!

So now Kim is both divorced and with child. Let’s see what happens with Mr. Kanye West in the months to follow.

Selena Gomez Bindi Trouble

6432776777_029569f402_z

I guess all isn’t fair in love and music.

On Sunday, April 14th, Selena Gomez took the stage at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards show to perform her new single “Come and Get It”. The song definitely caught me by surprise when I first heard it last week, with its Bollywood vibe. I can’t say it isn’t a catchy tune.

However, her performance that night stirred up much controversy in the Hindu community. Unfortunately Selena Gomez’s wearing of the Bindi, a traditional Hindu forehead decoration, is not sitting well with them.

Selena Gomez

The Traditional Bindi

“The bindi on the forehead is an ancient tradition in Hinduism and has religious significance. It is also sometimes referred to as the third eye and the flame, and it is an auspicious religious and spiritual symbol. It is not meant to be thrown around loosely for seductive effects or as a fashion accessory aiming at mercantile greed. Selena should apologize and then she should get acquainted with the basics of world religions,” said Rajan Zed, leader of the Universal Society of Hinduism in an E! News article about the controversy. They’re demanding an apology from Selena Gomez.

A little harsh there, no?

I don’t necessarily think Selena did anything wrong. It’s art, and it should be appreciated for what it is. I’m sure she meant no harm in wearing the Bindi for her performance.

I personally would not have worn a Bindi for that kind of performance only because of my paranoia that something like this would happen. Instead, I’d wear some kind of Indian forehead jewelry. But then again, they might say something negative about that too.

Not to worry though. Britney Spears has her back. She wrote on Twitter:

“Wow @SelenaGomez… “Come & Get It” on the #mtvmovieawards was incredible! One of my favorite songs out there right now!”

A fan commented on the E! News article “Selena Gomez Bindi Controversy: Hindu Group Offended by Singer’s Forehead Decoration at MTV Movie Awards”,

comment bindi

A good point is being made here. I don’t see any Catholics pointing figures at people who wear the Rosary and aren’t even of the Catholic faith. The Hindu community should seriously calm down about Selena!

Selena Gomez has not yet responded to the controversy.

In the mean time, check out the performance that started this mess!

WRHU 88.7 FM Hofstra University

IMAG1262

This lovely Monday I spent some time at the radio station WRHU 88.7 at my school, Hofstra University. Autumn and Alex were there hosting Alternative Nation, a segment that plays alternative rock songs from artists such as Sixpence None the Richer, Breaking Benjamin, and my favorite, Neon Trees.

They played some really good stuff while I was there. I sat at the table and jammed out to “It’s My Life” and “Do You Really Love Me?” by No Doubt, and the amazing “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay. They even let me request a song! Watch here.

Clearly I had a good time.

Autumn, a broadcast journalism major at Hofstra who helps out with the show “Alternative Nation” every other Monday from 11am-1pm, let me interview her when the show was over. She’s such a sweetheart. Watch the interview here!

WRHU serves the Long Island, NYC, and Conneticut areas. It is home to the New York Islanders Hockey, and of course, Hofstra Pride sports teams.

The station is known for being the leader in development of multimedia, new media, and diverging media platforms. It is Long Island’s largest radio news station team.
