Summer 2020 Mellow Yellow Playlist

Now that all the red, white, and blue is over for a little while, I thought it would be nice to throw a dash of yellow into the mix this summer to mellow out all the craziness going on around us.

Partially inspired by Washed Out’s Mr. Mellow (but more so by my love for the color yellow), I present to you 15 songs to help you continue calmly grooving through whatever comes your way during summer 2020:

1. Hard to Say Goodbye, Washed Out. Well, looks like you won’t have to, because we’re just getting started 😜

2. Yellow Flowers, Goldroom feat. Mereki. Say hello to all the sunflowers and daffodils and black-eyed Susans.

3. Bittersweet, Yellow Claw, Sofia Reyes. Satisfying in more ways than one.

4. Sunlight, Bag Raiders. It’s true. Don’t let anybody tell you differently.

5. Adore You, Harry Styles. NBD, just walking through active flames for an adorable person.

6. Waves (Tame Impala Remix), Miguel. Just ride it.

7. Rico, Wild Front. “Drive all night.”

8. The Other Side, Native Spirit. Let you heart sail through this beat.

9. Genius, LSD. Only a mellowed out genius could do such a thing.

10. Freestyle, Electric Guest. Taking it as it comes.

11. Amarillo, J Balvin. A mellow heart-thumper to pass the time.

12. Cala Banana, Satin Jackets. Chiquita is callin.’

13. Paradisco, Les Loupes. Put on your finest sheer blouse and let the summer breeze embrace you.

14. Night Time TV, Fenec Soler. When it’s midnight and you’re feeling in no way ready for bed.

15. Taste (Moon Boots Remix), Rhye. Play it one. more. time.

Stay safe, stay mellow.

The world better not experience a week like the last week of May 2020 ever again.

Despite all the ways May went wrong, I was still able to find some amazing things last month that’ll put a smile on your face, if only for a few moments.

April Favorites: ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel Film & “Chemicals” by SG Lewis

Well this is a first: I would have posted this two days ago my fingers were busy playing Wario’s Woods on my new Nintendo Switch Lite!

No doubt, my new life as a noob gamer has been a welcome distraction from the thing that shall not be named during this post. Let’s have some fun looking back at some other things in pop culture and entertainment that kept my mine off of said thing:

Favorite News Articles

1. The Hunger Games film series is getting a prequel movie! I haven’t read the books so I don’t even know what happens, much less which characters are in it, but I’m still hype.

2. This triathlete lost a virtual bike race because her husband tripped over the power cord. He’s for sure sleeping on the sofa indefinitely.

Favorite Music

1. “Chemicals” by SG Lewis. I can’t get enough of this Roosevelt-esque groove!

2. “Ride With Me”” by Pink Sweat$. It’s been a while since I’ve fallen in love with a classic R&B beat like this one.

March Favorites: SVU Spin-Off & “Fathers Hands” by Wavvy James

For March 2020’s edition of Monthly Favorites (and for the rest of however long this lasts) let’s just take a few moments to avoid discussing the topic that shall not be named for the sake of everyone’s sanity.

Just gonna jump right into it:

Favorite News Articles

1. Det. Elliot Stabler is coming back for an SVU spin-off! So hype.

2. A woman has been watering a fake plant for 2 whole years. April Fool’s came early for her, I guess.

3. Katy Perry is pregnant. So happy for her and Orlando Bloom!

Favorite Music

1. “Fathers Hands” by Wavvy James. The most beautiful rendition of “Yesterday.”

2. “Morado” by J Balvin. Loving the juxtaposition and debauchery in the lyrics.

Quarantine Diaries: General Feelings + Playlist

I haven’t been outside since Saint Patrick’s Day 2020.

And no, I did not spend my last hours of freedom as one usually would on any other March 17th, drinking Bailey’s Irish Cream and singing old Irish hymns with friends.

Quite the opposite, actually.

After my dentist appointment at 3pm, I went straight back to my parent’s place and prepared for self-isolation.

I debated going back to NYC, but it’s easier for me to practice social distancing out on Long Island. Residences out here are farther apart from each other, there’s not a lot of pedestrian traffic, and, moreover, if you don’t have a car (or a license) you can’t really get too far.

I’m not going to lie, I hate this.

The most I’ve done since March 17th was go out to get the mail, which is like three feet away from the door.

I’m lucky that I can work my full time job from home, but I miss being around my coworkers IRL. Zoom video chatting helps, but the energy isn’t the same.

And frankly, I’m getting tired of answering the door with gloves on and tediously transferring my Seamless delivery food from the restaurant’s tupperware to my parent’s dinnerware, hoping no germs touch the dining room table in the process.

I’ve run out of my favorite lemon ginger tea, and I can’t just waltz over to Target to get more because they’ve sold out.

My lips have started to sting and peel, and my acne is out of control because I’ve been stressing out so much over the uncertainty of this whole pandemic situation.

Anxiety levels. Do they have a limit? If so, my body doesn’t know them.

My muscles are so tense from a combination of slouching in my mom’s office chair, sprawling out in awkward positions on the couch while binge-watching Hulu, and contorting my neck while scrolling through Instagram in bed.

Coronavirus, please escort yourself back to hell where you belong.

I think the only thing that is keeping me ever-so-slightly sane is music. Yesterday, I jammed out to a bunch of my favorite love songs while scrubbing the dandruff (another possible symptom of my anxiousness) out of my hair in the shower and it felt amazing.

So, instead of the spring playlist I was planning to share for today’s blog post, I present to you a quarantine playlist to go along with this first installment of the “Quarantine Diaries.”

These are some of the most recent songs that I can’t stop listening to. Enjoy!

1. Dear God, Phantogram. Praying really hard these days.

2. Attack of Panic, Aly & AJ. “There’s a panic in [all of us]”.

3. Breathing, FAVELA. Trying not to forget how to do that.

4. I’m With It, Satin Jackets ft. Metaxas. “We’re going to make it all okay”.

5. Pretty Great, Fickle Friends. Vibe check.

6. Sunlight, BLOWSOM. Craving some vitamin D rn.

7. Since You’ve Asked, Birocratic. Essential minimalist jam.

8. New Love (Yummm Remix), From Indian Lakes. A masterpiece, remixed.

9. El Tejano, Lauv ft. Sofía Reyes. A little rendezvous for the stir-crazy.

10. Further Up (Na, Na, Na, Na, Na) – IAmChino Remix, Pitbull ft. Static & Ben El. Where my party people at?

11. Used To Like, Neon Trees. For when you’re going to extremes.

12. Circles, Post Malone. An apocalypto romance that is very fitting for these times.

13. Hotel, ATTLAS ft. MAYLYN. Shout out to the tourists trapped in hotels during this mess.

14. Any Song, ZICO. Honestly, whatever tunes make you happy, listen to ’em.

Do your part and stay safe during these trying times, folks. STAY HOME.

February Favorites: Hamilton Film & ‘The Sinner’ Season 3

Ah, February, the shortest month of the year, which, this year, we got an extra day in (yay leap year)!

Thankfully, February 2020 was not as horrid as the month prior. The Whisper Box turned seven years old (where has the time gone?!) and I went on a vacation as you saw in my previous post.

Let’s look back at my favorites for February 2020, shall we?

1. Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of his heinous crimes. As he should.

2. This sprinting javelina basically won us all over. Legendary.

3. Sophie Turner is pregnant! A second Jonas Bro is gonna be a daddy!

1. “In the Zone” by Tobtok ft. JLV. A sassy groove that reminds me so much of RÜFÜS DU SOL.

Winter 2020 Crazy Love Playlist

I decided to wait until Valentine’s Day to post this season’s winter playlist, a list of love-themed songs that I feel have a bit of a crazy vibe to them.

And don’t be fooled—this playlist is not all mush. I’ve thrown in a few songs about heartbreak as well to truly encompass the wide range of emotions that can be brought upon by romance.

Enjoy a crazy, mad journey of love with these 12 tracks.

1. Crazy In Love, Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z. You know I had to start this playlist off with a classic throwback.

2. Damn Baby, ALPINE. Damn indeed.

3. Glue, Fickle Friends. “Because our lips are like glue, I think I love you.”

4. Falling, Forever. Here’s to hoping we all fall “madly in love.”

5. Don’t U Want Me (Tyler Touché Remix), Young Franco feat. Blair de Milo. The desperation is real here.

6. Lovesick, Mura Masa. It’s as simple as the lyrics indicate.

7. One More Time, Jon Bellion. For when you just can’t get enough, even if it literally costs your legs.

8. Too Much (LEISURE Remix), Tora. Is too much love even possible?

9. Still Not Over You, Klyne. A mix of emotions.

10. Free Falling, Wolfside. A danceable free fall into love.

11. I Need You More, ATTLAS. The song’s title says it all.
12. Close, La Poré. End a cold winter night by “[sliding] in close.”

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day 2020!

January Favorites: ‘Black-ish’ 6×13 & Tame Impala’s “Lost In Yesterday” Music Video

A part of me didn’t want to look back at January 2020 because it was SO HORRID, but now I realize that compiling my favorites for this post will allow me to remember some of the fun stuff that occurred throughout the month.

It can only get better from here, right?

January 2020 had no shortage of great music and music videos, which is getting me super excited for what the rest of the year has in store.

Without further rambles, enjoy my favorites in pop culture and entertainment for January 2020:

Favorite Music

1. “Simmer” by Hayley Williams. So glad she’s branching out of Paramore for some solo work!

2. “Yummy” by Justin Bieber. I got serious Journals vibes from this track.

2019’s Best in Music

That wonderful time of year has come again—the time where I look back at all the songs, artists, and albums that provided the soundtrack to my year.

I will admit before diving into my list of 2019’s best that because of a new job I got about halfway through the year, I do not have as much disposable time to listen to Spotify and discover new artists anymore. I know. Tragic.

Regardless, the music I did find time to listen to was well worth it. Enjoy the best in music for 2019:

1. “Tied Up”, LEISURE, Twister. LEISURE for sure turned the heat up with this one.

2. “Just Like You”, Satin Jackets, Solar Nights. Still waiting to find out who the vocalist is on this amazing tune.

3. “Follow My Girl,” Japanese House, Good at Falling. Always so melodic.

4. “Knives,” Kim Petras, TURN OFF THE LIGHT. The title recommends it, so listen with the lights out for the full experience.

5. “Warm (ft. Haim)”, Charli XCX, Charli. If there’s anyone in the music industry that has grown significantly this decade, it’s Charli XCX.

6. “Unholy”, Miley Cyrus, SHE IS COMING. She came.

7. “Bags”, Clairo, Immunity. Bedroom pop queen can do no wrong.

8. “Karma”, Marina, Love + Fear. Such a well rounded allbum of highs and lows.

9. “bad idea”, Ariana Grande, thank u, next. I always feel like living dangerously when I listen to Ariana Grande, and this album is no exception.

10. “Señorita (ft. Camila Cabello), Shawn Mendes, Shawn Mendes. This kid is going places.

11. “Every Single Time”, Jonas Brothers, Happiness Begins. 13-year-old Dana is still screaming.

12. “Who I Am”, Toro y Moi, Outer Peace. Everything about this album was futuristic fun.

13. “Your Heartbeat Against Mine (ft. Nandi Rose Plunkett)”, From Indian Lakes, Dimly Lit. This LP caught me by surprise, and I loved every second.

14. “FWM”, Qveen Herby, EP 6. All hail the qveen.

15. “What Love Is”, Mystery Skulls, Back to Life. So many ’80s vibes on this!

Here’s to 2020!
