Winter 2014 Hibernation Playlist

Looks like the animals won’t be the only ones hibernating this winter.

Today is the day I walk across the stage with Hofstra pride to accept my Bachelor’s degree in journalism. And after today I’ll be catching up on all the sleep I’ve missed over the passed 16 years for waking up early to go to school.

Here are 14 dreamy tunes for you to fall asleep to this winter.

1. Feel It All Around, Washed Out: This track is a category five chiller. It’s so chill, you can even feel the winter chillwaves “all around yourself.”

2. The Zone, The Weeknd ft. Drake: These two will put you in the perfect zone to sink your head into that pillow and drift off onto cloud nine.

3. Tendency (Satin Jackets Remix), Estate and Liquid Pegasus: You have a tendency to fall asleep when you’re not supposed to, but this track will make you fall asleep when you need to.

4. Glowing in the Dark (Remix), Cider Sky: This song has the perfect bell-sounding synth to lull you right to sleep.

5. Mess I Made, Parachute: So you’ve made a mess of your sleep schedule. It’s okay. This song will get you back on track.

6. Sarah, RÜFÜS DU SOL: Let the somber vibe of this track put all your sadness to rest so that you can get a good night’s sleep.

7. Favorite Sound, Wilhelm Tell Me: You most definitely will not be “waking up through blurry eyes” tomorrow morning, but this might become your favorite sound.

8. Decorate, Yuna: Let Yuna’s voice decorate your brain with sweet thoughts of blissful slumber.

9. Marching Bands of Manhattan, Death Cab for Cutie: The only thing that’s going to drown is your feeling of constant drowsiness.

10. Dumbing Down of Love, Imogen Heap: Let this lovely British lady sing you a lullaby as you drift away from it all.

11. Sixteen, RAC: The interlude to your dreams awaits you.

12. Silhouette, Active Child ft. Ellie Goulding: Surround yourself with the angelic ambience of Active Child and Ellie Goulding.

13. Quiet Life, Stwo: Time for some piece and quiet.

14. 12, The 1975: This is the last call. The angels of sleep have come to take you away.

Have a healthy and well rested winter 2014!

Summer 2013 Playlist

summer playlist

It’s officially summer! Here comes the vacations, the parties and all the fun! But those summer activities wouldn’t be complete without a summer playlist now, would they?

Here are 14 fun, festive and relaxing summer songs to add to your summer playlist.

1. Summer’s Not Hot, Selena Gomez and the Scene: What else screams summer better than Selena Gomez literally screaming “It’s summer!” at the beginning of this track? The song is cute and fun, as she sings about the summer not being hot without her guy. Wink, wink.

2. So Many Details, Toro y Moi: This song is part of the chillwave genre, so it has a relaxing beat. The scenery in the video will make you want to take a relaxing vacation in The Carolinas.

3. Let the Groove Get In, Justin Timberlake: For those of you who know how to dance Samba, I envy you, because this song makes me want to dance the Samba. But I can’t do it properly because I don’t know how to. This song is perfect for an outdoor summer party with its festive beat.

4. Ride, Lana Del Rey: I’m not a big Lana fan but I heard this song for the first time during the Pretty Little Liars season 3 finale. It’s one of those songs you would listen to in your convertible with the top down letting the summer breeze take all your troubles away.

5. Move, CSS: Brazilian band CSS, acronym for Cansei de Ser Sexy (I’m Tired of Being Sexy), brings you a cool dance song that will get you moving at this summer’s backyard parties!

6. Trying to Be Cool, Phoenix: Because that’s all we’re trying to be this summer. Pop this French band’s tune on as you try to cool off in the air conditioning.

7. Fifteen (Oxford Remix), Goldroom ft. Chela: I love this song so much that it’s my alarm sound every morning. Chela sings in the first line “It’s been a long time, wondering why the summer smells like sin and wonder.” Indeed it does. And maybe we’ll never know why.

8. Hey Now, Candy Dulfer: What’s summer without a little bit of jazz? This song has the perfect balance of saxophone to make you wanna get groovy.

9. En la Obscuridad, Belinda: In English, the title would be “In the Darkness.” This song is so cute and the video is even cuter. We all know that one mysterious stranger we meet at a late night summer party that we want more from. This song will remind you of him.

10. I Need Your Love, Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding: This mellow electronic song coupled with Ellie Goulding’s fresh voice is the perfect dose of exactly what we need this summer.

11. She Wants to Go, Something like Kites ft. Patrick: Who doesn’t want to go this summer? Here’s another great party song for your party playlist. The awesome guitar chords in this song will make you definitely want to party it up!

12. Como Te Vas, Trails and Ways: This song is from another Brazilian band. The title in English would be “How’s it Going.” The song is sung in Spanish instead of Portuguese. It has a very relaxing summer vibe to it with its smooth guitar.

13. Scratch, BG5: I heard this song for the first time when they were featured on Keeping Up With the Kardashians because Kris Jenner manages the group. The beat of this song is a lot of fun, just the way summer should be.

14. Don’t Stop the Party, Pitbull: Because none of us want this party called summer to end, so enjoy it with Mr. Worldwide’s festive song!

This Week in Music: Mike Tompkins’ “Shake the Ground”

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 was a big day for Mike Tompkins.

Why?Shake the Ground

The genius of a musician released his first original single.

ORIGINAL.

NOT A COVER.

For those of you who have yet to meet the Canadian YouTube phenom, I’ll show you what this guy is about:

Yeah. His voice is his instrument. Literally.

He does covers like this regularly. Most of the songs he remixes with his mouth are of the pop genre, including Demi Lovato, Rihanna, and even Owl City.

You can imagine how excited his fans were when they learned of his original single.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to song beats, since he can rely on his own instrumentation. So would he choose a ballad or something fast paced? Heavy base or loud snare? Vocals or instrumental?

I was itching to know. So I went onto Spotify and listened.

And I loved it.

At first I was kind of disappointed. I stared at my computer thinking, no, Mike Tompkins can do way more than just a chorus of “Oh”s and a steady snare.

And then the beat dropped.

He went electronic on us.

Holy crap, that was unexpected!

“Shake the Ground” is a song about what it feels like to be in the party scene, or even on stage, where the flashing lights transform you.

He sings, “Somehow I feel born again tonight.” The feeling of bursting out of your own skin to show the world who you really are shines through in the lyrics of this song.

This song should definitely be on your next party playlist.

“Shake the Ground” probably describes exactly how Mike Tompkins felt when he performed his original song at Playlist Live.

The lyric video features scenes from his performance at Playlist 2013. No word of an official video yet.

Have a listen here. I dare you to challenge his Skrillex-like capabilities!

The Very Viral “Harlem Shake”

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you’ve probably heard about the “Harlem Shake” videos that are taking over YouTube. They began in early February 2013, and I have to admit, I can’t get enough of them!

The “Harlem Shake” videos are usually performed with one person dancing to the fifteen second intro of Baauer’s track titled “Harlem Shake” as a group of people sit around him or her doing busy work such as texting, reading etc. When the beat drops, there’s a jump cut to the entire group dancing like crazies for another fifteen seconds. The crazy dancing ranges from plain old jumping around to flailing one’s body parts all over the place. The best videos include people wearing random costumes. It looks extremely fun, and practically anyone can do it.

As reported on USA Today, “According to Kevin Allocca, YouTube trends manager, Harlem Shake video uploads have skyrocketed in the last few days. He writes that as of Feb. 11, 12,000 Harlem Shake videos have been posted this month” About 4,000 “Harlem Shake” videos are uploaded daily.

The man behind the music, Baauer, an electronic musician from Brooklyn, is mind-blown by the success these videos are bringing to his single. “Harlem Shake” reached number 1 on the US iTunes chart and number two on iTunes in Australia and the UK.

Here are a few of my favorite “Harlem Shake” videos! (In no particular order)

1. Harlem Shake Ryan Seacrest, Kendall & Kylie Jenner Edition

This “Harlem Shake” video was filmed in the studio with Ryan Seacrest, the Jenner sisters Kendall and Kylie and some other people from the radio station. It starts off with a guy wearing a sweater that says “Rich Fashion Advisory” walking from behind where Kendall and Kylie are sitting while thrusting his hands in the air. When the beat drops, everyone goes wild and the funniest person in the video is the guy wearing what looks like a frog suit who’s bouncing a turkey up and down. Hilarious!

2. Harlem Shake (Radio Station Edition) | talkSPORT

This one starts off with a guy wearing a pink onesie and a motorcycle helmet bouncing around casually. When the beat drops, boy you’re in for a laugh! I can’t tell which is funnier: the guy in the bubble wrap, the guy with the scream mask and the teapot, or the guy with the fisherman hat who’s banging the table with God knows what in his hand!

3. Harlem Shake Onesie Parents

As soon as I saw the baby during the intro for this video I knew it would be hilarious. A woman in a pink robe and motorcycle helmet flails her arms around while standing behind the couch as a man plays with a baby. When the beat drops, things get seriously weird and funny. Some extra people appear in onesie pajamas to join the fun, but the two to keep your eyes on are the man in the zebra onesie and the woman in the red onesie PJs. After the 0:25 second mark, these two are the only ones left in the room and they seem to be having a plant fight. You have to see it for yourself to understand why I can hardly type as I describe this video!

4. Harlem Shake @ Facebook

Facebook goes against the norm in their version of the “Harlem Shake”. The intro features a guy wearing a yellow smiley face head dancing while another guy wearing a mariachi hat bicycles around him in circles. Once the beat drops an extremely large crowd of people from the Facebook offices appear and the funniest two to watch for are the person in the penguin costume and the guy lying face down on the pavement.

5. UGA Men’s Swim & Dive Harlem Shake

I don’t know how they managed to do it but they did! The UGA Men’s Swim team did the “Harlem Shake” underwater! To be frank, the fact that it looks awkward while trying to wiggle around in a pool makes this version amusing on its own. Add a fifteen second intro with a guy on a table wearing nothing but swim briefs and a mask and you’re in for a good laugh. The guy under the table when the beat drops will have you rolling on the floor laughing!

6. Harlem Shake (Grandma Edition)

The guy in the fifteen minute intro can’t even keep himself from laughing as he dances! He knows we won’t be able to contain ourselves when the beat drops! I’ll just let Jackthegamer02’s comment sum this one up for you: “The [grandma] on the right looks like she’s trying to swat a fly”!

7. The Harlem Shake v69 (foreveralone edition)

This last “Harlem Shake” video features one of my favorite YouTubers, Connor Manning, doing the shake forever alone style. He breaks all the rules, rebel that he is, by starting off the video with a fifteen second intro of him sitting on a couch sipping a drink. When the beat drops, he put on the most ridiculous face imaginable and sways across the screen all alone! It’s so awkward and fun! I love it!

Which “Harlem Shake” video is your favorite?
