Fan Art Fridays: Sutton Foster

sutton foster

Thursday was World Ballet Day, and I couldn’t help but reminisce on Sutton Foster’s role as Vegas show-girl turned ballet teacher Michelle Simms in the ABC Family television show Bunheads. She taught her mother-in-law Madame Fanny’s ballet school alums on the series, and even though it’s been over a year since the show got cancelled I still miss her character.

If I were ever subjected to learning ballet I’d beg Michelle to teach me. Her jokes and sarcasm would make the experience worth while.

Therefore, in honor of yesterday’s World Ballet Day, I present to you this fine color-pencil drawing of Sutton Foster from Deviant Art. I just love how the earrings bring out her soft features, even more so than a real photograph of her at the Tony Awards in 2011. The eyelashes are very well drawn too!

Fan Art Fridays: Pretty Little Liars’ Aria Montgomery in Watercolor

Second new series on the blog! (Betcha didn’t see this coming!)

Fan Art Friday is going to be an awesome weekly segment where I post a fun piece of fan art I find online. This week’s fan art is of Aria Montgomery (played by Lucy Hale) from Pretty Little Liars. The art was submitted to the Pretty Little Campaign during the hiatus before season 6.

I really love how this one stands out from the rest. I wasn’t expecting to see anything in watercolor while I searched through the pages of fan art. I wonder if this was scanned in or edited digitally. It was probably the latter. Either way, I think it’s a really creative depiction of Aria Montgomery. The choice of blue and green color really makes her look soft and sincere.

Another week of amazing Pretty Little Liars fan art has come and gone! I absolutely LOVED these ship montages from last week’s challenge. The GIFs from the show are always superb, and these submissions to the Pretty Little Campaign were no exception.

Since there were so many great ship montages, I limited myself to only picking four of them―one for each of my favorite couples on the show.

Here are my faves!

Round two of the Pretty Little Campaign is upon us! It’s time to get your final votes in for the #ChArlesIsA shareable graphics created by none other than the amazingly talented Pretty Little Liars fanbase.

I will admit that I enjoyed last week’s season six premiere fan art more than this week’s graphics. There’s much less variety with this round’s #ChArlesIsA theme, which could be the reason why I haven’t been all that excited about the fan art currently circulating on PrettyLittleCampaign.com.

However, that does not mean that I didn’t find any #ChArlesIsA shareable graphics I’d like to see make the cut. Here are five of my top picks, and make sure to vote for your personal favorites by the end of today, April 14th!

PrettyLittleCampaign - Edited

For the next two months, fans of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars will be hard at work creating and voting for the art that goes into the Pretty Little Campaign.

Hey, at least they’re doing something to satisfy our PLL addictions until the summer ends.

Until April 7th, fans can submit their Season 6 premiere art for a chance to be featured in Seventeen Magazine’s June/July issue. There are so many amazing PLL edits currently up on PrettyLittleCampaign.com, including Photoshopped images, sketches and even watercolor. Only one piece of fan art will win the Season 6 premiere ad spot, so here are my five favorites:

A Sad Au Revoir to ‘Bunheads’

bunheads

The wait is over. ABC Family has decided to cancel Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Bunheads.

I cannot believe that after being in limbo for five months they’ve decided to drop the series.

With all the new shows being added to the lineup on the network, there really isn’t a spot for Bunheads. ABC Family has chosen to pick up shows such as The Fosters, Twisted, and the new Ravenswood this fall.

This isn’t the first time ABC Family dropped a show I’d grown attached to. Last year they dropped Jane by Design, a show about a high school girl named Jane who got a job as an assistant to fashion designer Grey Chandler. The only reason she was hired for the position was because she was mistaken for an adult.

I can see how a plot line for a show like that would fizzle out, but Bunheads? No. Bunheads was special.

The show Bunheads is about a Las Vegas showgirl named Michelle Simms (Sutton Foster) who gets swept off her feet by Hubbell Flowers, an admirer who frequents her shows. She marries and moves with him to Paradise, California where he dies in a car accident hours after the reception. Michelle is left with Hubbell’s mother, Madam Fanny and her ballet dance studio. Since Michelle was a former bunhead (ballerina) she ends up helping to teach the classes.

I’m really going to miss Michelle. She had a very sarcastic and witty sense of humor that will turn any bad day upside down.

I’ll also miss the students from Madam Fanny’s class, especially Ginny and Boo.

Also seeing one of my favorite contestants from So You Think You Can Dance, Jeanine Mason as Cozette, was very refreshing. I didn’t even know she could act. It’s great to see that her career is taking off.

However, this is the end. No more quirky ballerinas. No more Michelle’s hot surfer dude boyfriend with a PhD. No more cute Carl and Boo romance. No more ridiculous barista at the town coffee shop.

The saddest part is that the season 1 finale (now the series finale) ended with Ginny crying on Michelle’s shoulder. Now I’m crying with Ginny!

I hope the actors of Bunheads get picked up for other shows. I’ll be looking out for them.

And now for a few of the amazing ballet dance routines from Bunheads:

A Glimpse into ‘Ravenswood’

In last night’s Pretty Little Liars episode titled “Under the Gun,” viewers get a sneak peek at Ravenswood, the town where the spinoff series of the same name is to take place.

ravenswood

Ravenswood is set to air this October on ABC Family, and boy does it look creepy.

As soon as Spencer Hastings and Toby Cavanaugh (Troian Bellisario and Keegan Allen) enter the fictional town in Pennsylvania, one notices the colors are a bit off.

And not in a good way.

The color is drained from literally everything in the town. The asphalt on the streets of Ravenswood are not black. No, no. They’re gray.

And the leaves on the trees and the bushes? Not green. Black.

Spencer takes one look around and notices that there are no street signs. Huh.

Asking for directions? Well good luck with that, because there’s a 99.9% chance that the woman who just walked passed you with a child on each hand will pretend she didn’t hear you.

Not exactly the kind of town I’d like to be stuck in.

Then there’s that weird music that lures everyone to the angel statue in the graveyard at noon, almost like a sinister afternoon lullaby.

From the Pretty Little Liars Official Facebook Page

From the Pretty Little Liars Official Facebook Page

It doesn’t help that all the citizens of Ravenswood walk like zombies.

To top it off, there are ravens. Groups of ravens. But they look like crows. Do you know what they call a group of crows? A murder. Groups of ravens can be either a constable, a conspiracy, or unkindness.

I suspect this group is all three: an investigator of crime, an evil plan, and some sort of wicked scheme.

One of the ravens/crows hit the windshield of Spencer’s car as she was trying leave Ravenswood to follow Shana. It’s chest was ripped open, leaving behind a splatter of dark red blood.

If that’s what Ravenswood is going to look like all season, then I’m preparing myself for the nightmares.

Because I don’t do well with horror.

I don’t know about the rest of you Pretty Little Liars fans, but Ravenswood isn’t exactly my cup of tea.

However, I might only watch it for Caleb Rivers.

Movie Review: ‘Lovestruck: The Musical’

So last night I spent some time sitting on the couch in front of my beloved flat screen to watch Lovestruck: The Musical on ABC Family.

lovestruck

The movie looked promising, featuring actors like Drew Seeley, Chelsea Kane (known as Chelsea Staub pre-2008; still not sure why she changed her stage name) and Jane Seymour.

This film contains high levels of singing, dancing, romance, and beautiful scenery. Those ingredients are all I need to be glued to the television screen for two hours!

The movie starts out with Mirabella (Sara Paxton) rushing to dance class to break the news to her mother, Harper (Jane Seymour), about her decision to quit the show in order to live in Italy with her husband-to-be, Marco. Harper trips on stage during the opening number, “Just Dance”, originally by Lady Gaga, due to her bad knee. She then sends her dancers to find her some aspirin as she goes off to the back room to deal with her daughter.

Here’s where the plot line becomes almost too predictable. Harper is now concerned (as most mothers would be) that her daughter is making a huge mistake. She therefore proceeds to threaten a lawsuit against Mirabella for deciding to quit the show. Mirabella then bans her mother from the wedding, and her mother decides to make it her business to show her that Marco is not the type of guy who will leave his “Playboy” lifestyle for her.

Meanwhile the dancers find Harper not only some aspirin, but a small bottle of Vitality Tonic as well.

We all know what happens next.

Harper gets on a flight to Italy, where the wedding is to take place, messed up knee and all, to then realize that she doesn’t have her aspirin. So what does she do? You guessed correctly: the woman resorts to drinking the Vitality Tonic. The potion turns Harper into her younger self (played by Chelsea Kane), and this gives her all the more advantage in seducing Marco.

The morning after successfully seducing Marco on the night of the bachelor and bachelorette parties, young Harper, who is at this point pretending to be a distant cousin so as not to blow her cover, goes to the bridal shop with Mirabella. After a while she notices that the potion is wearing off, so she rushes back to the house. On the way back, Harper overhears Marco telling his best man about the kiss he shared with her the night before. Unfortunately, Mirabella happens to be walking across the bridge as the conversation between Marco and his best man continues, and she is left to believe three things: her mother was right about Marco, she cannot marry Marco, and her maid of honor, Noelle (Adrienne Bailon), is the girl that turned her fiance unfaithful.

The events of this film are hilarious. The Vitality Tonic only lasts for a certain amount of time, and each time Harper takes a dose, her body reacts weirdly. The first time she drinks the stuff she faints, hyperventilates, and begins blowing into a little baggy, all while in the restroom at the airport in Italy.

I had a good laugh at this movie.

Ok. Now for the things I disliked about this movie:

1. When Mirabella sings “Like a Virgin” along with the rest of the bridesmaids during the bachelorette party, she sounds like a dying baby seal.  Did they forget to do the autotune or something for this girl’s voice?! Young Harper sings it again while seducing Marco and her voice was magical. My God. I don’t know what happened to Sara Paxton during that scene. The rest of her singing parts in other scenes were fantastic though. Just that one damn song! Ugh!

2. Speaking of young Harper seducing Marco, it all happened way too quickly for me. He was supposedly drunk, and just willingly went along with the whole kiss. It seemed a bit unreal.

3. There were not enough scenes where the Italian language was spoken. In fact, there was only one scene where the seamstress calls Mirabella back to have her dress fitted in Italian instead of English. I wanted to hear more of that beautiful language!

And now for the highlights of the film:

1. When Harper’s ex husband, Ryan, arrives, even though she is in younger form, he knows his ex wife is there because of the Chanel No. 5 perfume lingering in the halls. So romantic!

2. The moment I was waiting for: when Harper drugs Ryan with some of the Vitality Tonic so that he won’t blow her cover and he turns into young Ryan, played by Drew Seeley. I think my popcorn bowl was filled with drool at that point.

3. When Harper and Ryan dance to “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love” (originally by Usher and Pitbull) at the rehearsal dinner! MUST SEE MOVIE MUSICAL MOMENT!

4. The scenery. Italy is just pure beauty. I totally want to visit one day, and this film reminded me how much I want to go there for my honeymoon when, and if, I get married someday.

And can we all pause for a second just to appreciate how amazing Jane Seymour looks with that blonde bob?!

jane bob

All in all, I think this movie was a crowd-pleaser. The music selection was okay. They could have picked some better pieces, but the dances were definitely well choreographed. Dancing with the Stars surely taught Chelsea Kane a thing or two!

lovestruck soundtrack

I do wish that they had played up the concept of immortality at the end of the film. When Harper is faced with the decision to drink one last dosage of the Vitality Tonic, an action that would turn her into a young adult forever, I began to realize that sometimes the aging process is a part of life that you might not want to give away. Mirabella would never have happened had she chosen to take that third dosage, and this is something I wished were emphasized to a greater degree in the movie.

Best quote from the movie:

“I know that ass, I fell in love with that ass. In fact, I spent the better part of the 80s worshiping that ass.” – Ryan, Harper’s ex husband

Wondering who catches the bouquet? Well I guess you’ll have to watch the movie whenever it airs again on ABC Family to find out!
Enjoy this dance featurette!

The Couples On “Pretty Little Liars”

PrettyLittleLiarsIntertitle

If you happen to be a Pretty Little Liars fan, you probably wish the couples on the show were real. The way the men treat their women (and in Emily’s case the women treat her) is something hard to come by in the real world. Nevertheless, fans crave the on screen action from Ezria, Haleb, Spoby, and Emaya.

Whenever there’s tension between the couples on the show, tweets fly from left and right about how sad we’ll all be if [fill in the blank] split. Fans have grown to love the on screen romance and want to see the couples make it through. Let’s take a closer look at each of the PLL couples and what makes them special.

Ezria (Ezra Fitz and Aria Montgomery):

Ezra and Aria’s relationship is by far the most risky of them all. Ezra and Aria met before they knew that he would be teaching at Rosewood High, where the girls attend school. This relationship is filled with the thrills of sneaking around, making it all the more interesting.
Ezra quits his job at Rosewood High due to a student’s treat to expose the relationship to the authorities. He soon lands a job at Hollis as a college professor and is coincidentally reunited with an ex, Jackie, who also threatens to expose the couple. Aria’s parents find out about the two, and her father, Byron, is furious. Byron tries to promote Ezra to a school out of state so that he would be away from his daughter, but fails to convince him that he should leave. When Ezra’s mom finally meets Aria, she tries to bribe her with money to break up with her son. Ezra becomes livid, because a similar incident occurred with his ex in high school. At the time Aria doesn’t know, but Ezra had gotten a girl pregnant as a teen and his mom gave her money to shut up about it and have an abortion.
Wesley, Ezra’s younger brother, drops in during season three with a skeleton from Ezra’s closet—a son he never knew about. Apparently Maggie, the girl he got pregnant, never had the abortion. Ezra learns about his seven year old son from Spencer because of a prank from “A”. He decides to go visit his ex Maggie and her son, leaving Aria to wonder if things will ever be the sane when he returns.

Haleb (Hanna Marin and Caleb Rivers):

http://instagram.com/p/jdgNBuCXak/#

Hanna’s boyfriend Caleb is a former foster child. He’s a computer wiz who has come in handy as the girls run into technological obstacles while investigating “A”. Caleb begins living in Hanna’s basement, and one morning her mom almost discovers him. Hanna quickly jumped into the shower with Caleb in order to keep his basement residence a secret.  Calling those 3 minutes an awkward moment would be an understatement.
Caleb loses Hanna’s trust in season one and he leaves Rosewood, causing Hanna to believe that he never really cared for her. Before leaving though, he leaves a note with Hanna’s friend (now frenemy) Mona. Hanna never gets the note.
When Caleb returns he does everything to try to win her back. Hanna finally gives in, and it is now in his best interest to protect her from Mona, who has revealed her involvement with the “A” team.

Spoby (Spencer Hastings and Toby Cavanaugh):

http://instagram.com/p/jedipZAjMC/#

In the beginning, none of us thought that anything would ever happen between creepy Toby and level headed Spencer. Boy were we wrong! Toby has become one of the sexier men of the cast, along with heartthrobs Ezra and Caleb.
The relationship between Toby and Spencer was not always smooth. Spencer once disapproved of Toby’s friendship with Emily, but as she saw him being taunted in the streets for Alison’s murder, she began to sympathize. Toby was proven guilty, and a romance formed between the two.
Sadly, Toby was reavealed as season three’s betrAyer. As part of the “A” team, he works closely with Mona, who is also part of the team. Spencer finds out about his involvement on the night of their anniversary, leaving her devastatingly heartbroken.
Spencer hires a private investigator to follow him around and find out what door the key she found labeled “A” opens. The private investigator gives her the address and she tells him that she hopes to find the things she and Toby always talked about behind the door. If she doesn’t, the investigator recommends that she move on.

Emaya (Emily Fields and Maya Saint Germaine):

The short lived relationship of Emily and Maya was by far one of the most tragic. On top of the fact that Emily was discriminated against for being lesbian, which caused people to treat her differently, Maya was killed in season 2. Maya was Emily’s first girlfriend and first love. She had a tendency to lead straight guys on, and that bothered Lyndon James, a guy that showed interest in Maya. He begins to stalk her, driving her decision to run away to San Francisco with friends. Lyndon follows her and kills her, causing Emily to fall into a deep depression.
Paige comes along and tries to be everything Emily ever saw in Maya. Unfortunately, Lyndon wants revenge from Emily. He wants to make her feel what its like to lose someone you care about. Therefore he tries to kill Paige, but Emily ends up shooting him with his own gun. Caleb gets mixed up in this mess as well, requiring surgery for a bullet wound. Of course, Emily is now traumatized.
