Fan Art Fridays: Happy Belated Birthday, Justin Bieber

justin bieber fan art

When Justin Bieber’s birthday rolls around on March 1st, I’m reminded of how old I’m getting and how much time I have left to plan some sort of event for myself in May.

He celebrated his birthday a-la-Frozen in a stalactite cave with some of his buddies, posing for some Instagram shots along the way. He looks quite sad/annoyed in this pic though:

And then he went all “home video” style with a time stamp on this one:

I totally get it, man. We’re getting old.

Anyway, I found this lovely piece of fan art by jaysonframe on Instagram, featuring the Biebs with glassy light brown eyes. Justin Bieber’s hair disappears into this sketch, which is totally cool with me, because I’m actually getting kind of annoyed with the bleach blonde…

Enjoy the original fan art here.

Top 5 Performances at the 58th #Grammys

grammys

I had way too much fun watching the 58th Grammys on Monday night!

From the fashion to the presenter monologues, the show was definitely one to watch. LL Cool J hosted with his LL broach on the lapel of his suit jacket and several pieces of blindingly sparkling rings on his fingers.

Also, is it just me, or did everyone decide to show up with a haircut?! Taylor Swift went à la Anna Wintour, Sam Smith looked so much older with a closer shave, and Adele looked stunning with a shorter ‘do. Even the Lincoln Navigator commercial that showed during the Grammys featured Matthew McConaughey with shorter hair. WHAT IS THIS?!

Anyway, here were the performances that got me off the couch and on my feet throughout the evening.

1. Lionel Richie Tribute Medley, John Legend, Demi Lovato, Tyrese and others

You know you were alive before the new millenium when you get uber excited about hearing “Hello” and “Brick House.” I also really loved the suit Demi Lovato wore for her portion of the performance.

2. “I Can’t Feel My Face” and “In the Night” by The Weeknd

Gotta love seeing this crazy haired man perform!

3. “Love Yourself” and “Where Are U Now” by Justin Bieber

Loved the acoustic version of “Love Yourself.” Not sure how I feel about that cheetah jacket on the Biebs, though.

4. David Bowie Tribute Medley, Lady Gaga

Can we just stop for a second to appreciate how much effort she put into the aesthetics of this performance?! They couldn’t have picked a better person to do this tribute. Also, that robot keyboard is too cool.

5. “El Taxi” by Pitbull

Two words: SOFIA VERGARA. Boy, does Pitbull know how to close a show!

Fan Art Fridays: Happy Belated Birthday, Selena Gomez!

selena gomez fan art

Selena Gomez turned turned 23 this week! Woohoo!

Apparently, on her birthday (July 22nd), Justin Bieber supposedly sang her a “Happy Birthday” song over FaceTime, complete with a rose and all (not sure which version of the birthday song, but I hope it was PG).

Some stars have a habit of giving the fans a gift around their birthday as well, and Selena is no exception. She announced that her upcoming album Revival will be released on October 9th!

Are you excited or what?!

In celebration of these events, I’ve dedicated this weeks Fan Art Fridays to her. This piece of fan art was found on Instagram, and it was done by self-taught artist @aldohatta.

Happy belated birthday, Selena Gomez!

Cue the music.

#FashionRocks 2014 Highlights

New York Fashion week brought a night of hot models, amazing performances and bootyliciousness to the Fashion Rocks event at Barclay’s Center on Tuesday.

The show was hosted by Ryan Seacrest, who looked absolutely dapper in a suit and blue bow tie.

The evening began with the very anti-climatic entrance of Usher, introduced by a pre-taped motorcycle ride through NYC. He proceeded to perform “She Came to Give It to You” with some help from Jourdan Dunn who looked stunning!

The rest of the performances failed to disappoint. Here are some of the night’s highlights:

1. Pitbull’s Gatsby-esque performance of “Fireball.” It’s always a party with Pitbull.

2. When Ryan Seacrest stood with a group of gorgeous models.

3. Enrique Iglesias’ performance with Sean Paul.

4. JLo’s “Booty.” WOW.

5. When JLo started giving Nicki Minaj the look during her “Anaconda” performance. #BootyWars

6. When Justin Bieber stripped down to his underwear and the audience booed him.

7. Rita Ora grabbing a male model’s butt. And then wished she could follow him off stage.

8. Latrice Royale. ‘Nuff said.

What did you think of all the craziness that happened during the show?

“Bieber Hair” Helps Fight Against Skin Cancer

Apparently Justin Bieber is doing some good deeds these days?

It turns out that Bieber’s infamous haircut, one that he no longer sports these days, helps protect against skin cancer.

Researchers Bernard Cohen and Crystal Agi of Johns Hopkins University conducted the study in which they concluded that the hairdo’s bangs protect the forehead, preventing melanoma.

Interestingly, the experiment was originally called “The Justin Bieber Effect.” Ever since Bieber’s numerous misdemeanors, they decided to change the project name to “The Big Bang Theory: Adolescent Hairstyles and Sun Protection.”

Cohen and Agi are not advocates of the 20-year-old Canadian superstar’s former ‘do. They simply wanted to find a way to begin a discussion about skin cancer among young people.

“It can be hard to talk to teens about the importance of sun protection because they often think of cancer as something that happens long down the road, but I see 12-year-olds who develop age spots after one bad sunburn,” Cohen told Yahoo!

I’m wondering if the Biebs is at risk now that he’s moved away from that circa 2009 look?

Still protected against those UV rays though, right?

Justin Bieber’s Deposition: 50 Shades of Hilariously Rude

Biebs Depo

Youtube

Forgive me, I’m still recovering from having watched this shenanigans.

TMZ released the footage from Justin Bieber’s deposition today.

The deposition was held in Miami last week to discuss the lawsuit his bodyguard faces for allegedly beating up a paparazzi.

The footage is actually over four hours long, so TMZ cut it down to its best bits.

And my God, this kid needs to chill! He goes from mumbling his answers to repeatedly claiming “I don’t recall”to storming out of the room with his lawyer over a question about Selena Gomez.

JEEZ.

I will admit, despite the excessive amounts of rudeness in the deposition footage, it’s quite hilarious.

Between all of his arrogant responses, Bieber finds time to fix his collar, take short naps, and even WINK at the camera.

The best ROTFL moment for me is the portion where the paparazzi’s lawyer, Mark DiCowden, asks Bieber to take a look at the “film” evidence on the TV screen behind him. He proceeds to get worked up about the fact that he used the word “film” to describe what is being shown on the screen.

Absolutely ridiculous!

Of course, the deposition wouldn’t be complete without a dumb-Bieber moment, as he responds, “I think I was detrimental to my own career,” to a question about Usher having discovered him.

At least he’ll admit that much of the truth.

2013’s Best in Music

music illustrationA lot of great art came to be in the entertainment world this year. The music industry especially saw some amazing projects across all genres. From pop/rock to indie, the albums that were produced in the year 2013 were spectacular, and have been on my Spotify playlist since the first week of their release. Here are 20 of the best albums created in 2013, along with my favorite song from each one:

1. Santa Fe,” Andrew Belle, Black Bear
Andrew Belle really blew me away with this album. His new dream pop sound is eargasmic, and I hope he sticks to it for a little while.

220px-Prism_cover
2. International Smile,” Katy Perry, Prism
Prism was a mixture of sentimental Katy and fun Katy, her wild side tamed to a bare minimum. The upbeat tracks on the album are a blast to listen to.

3. Deja Vu,” Urban Cone, Our Youth
Thanks to the MTV VMAs, ever since “New York” played during the award show commercial break, Our Youth is one of my most played albums of the month. Their relaxed alternative vibe is definitely one to tune into.

220px-Artpop_cover
4. Fashion!,” Lady Gaga, ARTPOP
What would Lady Gaga be without  her fashion?! ARTPOP is a giant koons ball of a treat for the Little Monsters.

220px-Bangerz
5. Rooting for My Baby,” Miley Cyrus, Bangerz
The most talked about celebrity of the year managed to blow up during the second half of 2013 with her VMA performance and raunchy music videos. Had a bad day at work? There’s a Miley song for that!

220px-In_a_Tidal_Wave_of_Mystery_by_Capital_Cities_artwork
6. “Origami,” Capital Cities, In A Tidal Wave of Mystery
Capital Cities is one of 2014’s bands to watch. Their 80s electro-pop vibe is groovy like no other.
220px-Vampire_Weekend_-_Modern_Vampires_of_the_City
7. Everlasting Arms,” Vampire Weekend, Modern Vampires of the City
Vampire Weekend has done it again, coming in at number one on Rolling Stones “Best Albums of the Year,” and rightfully so. Each track on MVOTC has its own unique story.

220px-Phoenix_-_Bankrupt!_cover
8. Trying To Be Cool,” Phoenix, Bankrupt!
The French invasion by band Phoenix proved to be a success with the fans in New York after an amazing night at Barclay’s Center this year. Wish I could have been there!

9. “Mountains,” Yuna, Nocturnal
Yuna’s combination of sweet songbird and vibrant melodic sass come together to create a beautiful array of island paradise on Nocturnal.

220px-Justin_Bieber_Journals
10. “Confident,” Justin Bieber, Complete My Journals
I can’t even handle how grown up Justin Beiber’s voice is on this album. It’s unreal how the little kid that once upon a time had a song called “One Time” on Radio Disney turned out to sound like this!

220px-Random_Access_Memories
11. “Instant Crush,” Daft Punk feat. Julian Casablancas, Random Access Memories
Daft Punk + The Strokes = Perfection. Have you seen the amazing music video for their latest single?!

220px-When+It+Was+Now+PNG
12. “When It Was Now,” Atlas Genius, When It Was Now
The smooth alternative rock of Australia’s Atlas Genius is “almost too much to be enough.” It really is.

220px-Stars_Dance
13. “Save The Day,” Selena Gomez, Stars Dance
Even though Selena is planning to take a break from singing after this year, I have to admit, despite her inability to sing well live, Stars Dance is her best music project to date.

14. “Closer Than This,” St. Lucia, When The Night
How we all long to get closer to Jean-Phillippe Grobler. The old fashioned synth of St. Lucia is so addicting!

220px-Lorde_Pure_Heroine
15. “A World Alone,” Lorde, Pure Heroine
I sometimes forget that this girl is only 17. She’s got such a bright future ahead of her. Just keep it coming with the bedroom confessionals, Lorde.

220px-IceOnTheDune
16. “DNA,” Empire of the Sun, Ice On The Dune
“Be mine, be my DNA,” Luke Steele. Trust me, you’ll want some of it too. Everyone does. (Except for the horrified woman whose house they invaded in the music video).

220px-Avicii_-_True_(Album)
17. “Dear Boy,” Avicii, True
You can always count on Avicii to be true to his fans. This entire album is about dedication to the EDM fandom.

18. “Thunder,” Gold Fields, Black Sun
Without Empire of the Sun, Black Sun would not be on this list, because I only know of them due to the fact that Gold Fields opened for them earlier this year. “Thunder” is literally the first song I play on Spotify whenever it’s pouring rain outside.

220px-Washed_Out_-_Paracosm
19. “Great Escape,” Washed Out, Paracosm
Earnest Greene, can I live inside your head? Can I be in your paracosm, as a fairy perhaps?

220px-Toro_y_Moi_-_Anything_in_Return
20. “Rose Quartz,” Toro Y Moi, Anything in Return
The sexual tension on this album is too much for words. “I feel weak. Uh huh.”

2013 music

Here’s to a great year of music, and another opportunity for loads more in 2014!

This Week in Music: Justin Bieber’s Music Monday Track “Bad Day”

Bad Day Art

Justin Bieber’s new Music Monday track, “Bad Day,” dropped early this morning at 12:01 am.

Music Monday is Bieber’s new way of releasing his album. Every Monday from October 7th until mid-December, fans get a song from the singer, totaling ten brand new tracks.

As his manager, Scooter Braun stated in an interview with Billboard:

“Justin had this complete body of work that was very different from the stuff he had done in the past — very R&B-driven, personal songs, not necessarily songs that he was thinking of as radio records. That’s why he called them ‘journals.’ They’re very, very personal to what he’s been feeling over the last six months, going through a tough time. If you listen to the lyrics in these songs — “Heartbreaker,” “All That Matters” — he’s pouring his heart out. When I looked at that, I looked at it as, “He didn’t write one journal.” He wrote them in different days, [with] different emotions at different points, and I wanted people to experience what he was feeling, week to week… As each week comes, people will have a different type of song, and understand the different experience he’s going through week to week.”

Said “journals” sound like a mating call to his ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, as he sings songs such as “Heartbreaker” and “Recovery” to beg her forgiveness.

Bieber’s now mature voice might drive the ladies absolutely insane. His voice coach has worked miracles to bring his boyish charm to manhood.

Monday, November 4th’s song released for the series is called “Bad Day,” echoing the infamous David Powter tune.

Bieber’s “Bad Day” begins with a sweet, romantic guitar melody. The song is more of a ballad with its slow tempo and legato vocals.

Justin Bieber goes the extra mile to show off his voice with a nice falsetto in the hook as he sings, “Didn’t waste any time /  Like you had already made up your mind,” and later, “And I didn’t think it was over / Until you walked away.”

This song is the shortest of the series so far, coming in just under 2:30. The other Music Monday tracks are over three minutes long.

The R&B feel of “Recovery” and “Heartbreaker” fit Bieber’s style better. “Bad Day” didn’t really strike a chord with me this week.

Enjoy “Bad Day” and the other Music Monday tracks on Spotify.
