Winter 2016-17 Calling Your Name Playlist

winter-1209851_960_720

So, this winter playlist is going to get a little weird.

I’ve been toying with the idea of making a playlist of songs named after people for a while. The only season it really fit in, to me, is winter.

You know how in movies there’s sometimes a girl in the forest during the winter shouting someone’s name into the void, hoping she’ll hear a response echoing back? That’s the kind of vibe I wanted to capture with this playlist.

Enjoy the 12 songs on this winter 2016-17 playlist!

1. Josephine (Alfa Mist Remix), RITUAL ft. Lisa Hannigan. Some serious sensuality going down right here.

2. Virginia Wolf, mAsis. For those lonely winter nights when you just want to be alone.

3. Genghis Khan, Miike Snow. Jealousy, anyone?

4. For Elise, Saint Motel. “You need a spark, a light in the dark, to get you out of your head and into your heart.”

5. Sweet Ophelia, Zella Day. Time for some deep reflection.

6. Stephen, Kesha. You better call her, Stephen. None of that 72 hours nonsense.

7. Roman, Housse de Raket. “What have you done?”

8. Ramona, Night Beds. This one’s easy on the ears.

9. Geronimo, Sheppard. I don’t recommend you jump into the waterfall. It’s cold, and that’s dangerous.

10. Jenny, the bird and the bee. “Where are you, Jenny? Don’t you know that I am calling on the telephone?”

11. Hey Maria, Klangkarussel. Here’s a cool little foot-tapping number.

12. Randy, Justice. “Get yourself together.”

Stay warm this winter!

Gallery Mondays: Winter Rabbit

We had our first official snow day of 2017 this weekend.

Not fun.

On my way to the N train last week, I walked by Chase bank on West 39th between Fashion Ave. and Broadway when I saw this cute winter rabbit on the window.

I just love how innocent and vulnerable he looks! The colors are so winter wonderland-ish, and the muscle texture of the rabbit makes him look super agile.

Did you guys enjoy the snow day? Let me know in the comments!

Fan Art Fridays: Happy Belated Birthday, Justin Bieber

When Justin Bieber’s birthday rolls around on March 1st, I’m reminded of how old I’m getting and how much time I have left to plan some sort of event for myself in May.

He celebrated his birthday a-la-Frozen in a stalactite cave with some of his buddies, posing for some Instagram shots along the way. He looks quite sad/annoyed in this pic though:

And then he went all “home video” style with a time stamp on this one:

I totally get it, man. We’re getting old.

Anyway, I found this lovely piece of fan art by jaysonframe on Instagram, featuring the Biebs with glassy light brown eyes. Justin Bieber’s hair disappears into this sketch, which is totally cool with me, because I’m actually getting kind of annoyed with the bleach blonde…

Enjoy the original fan art here.

Gallery Mondays: “Winter Break” by Adrian Tomine

Mid-winter break is over, kiddos.

Last week I found myself wandering into The POWERHOUSE Arena, a bookstore/exhibition space in Brooklyn, where I came across several prints by cartoonist Adrian Tomine.

Tomine’s “Winter Break” stood out to me the most for two reasons. The first was the fact that it was actually mid-winter break for NYC public school students, which I was constantly reminded of when I didn’t see the school crossing guard on the way to the train station during my morning commute. The second was the fact the cartoon depicts a juxtaposed snowy city scene with an ice cream truck waiting on the block for God knows who to buy ice cream from it in the freezing cold. “Winter Break” was originally published in the February 2, 2009 issue of The New Yorker.

What I love most about this print is the silhouette of the city in the background. The light green filter over the buildings give the print a serene touch.

This print is available for purchase on Adrian Tomine’s website, and of course, at The POWERHOUSE Arena.

Gallery Mondays: Winter Wooden Deer

winter wooden deer

If you passed by or entered a TD Bank during December 2015, you might have seen these adorable wooden crafted animals sporting the bank’s green accessories.

This little deer was sitting on a ledge at the TD Bank near 9th Ave in Midtown, NYC. He’s got a green striped scarf on with a little TD Bank pin and a snowy pine tree behind him.

The little tiny pieces of wood that were used to make this deer couldn’t have been an easy task to complete. But the finished product is one to gush over.

I just wish they would have kept these little guys around all winter!
