may 2016 faves

I was having too much fun lately so this monthly favorites is kind of overdue—I’m aware.

May started out sort of on the meh side, but as the month progressed and my birthday came around, things were getting pretty interesting in the world of pop culture.

I had way too much fun with YouTube this month. Be sure to check out those videos below.

Here are my favorites for the month of May.

Fan Art Fridays: That Dangerous Woman Ariana Grande

ariana grande dangerous woman fan art

Do you know that “Dangerous Woman”? The “Greedy” one that makes “Bad Decisions”?

Well her album came out today. (Now I guess you can tell which tracks from Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman are my faves!)

I’ve been waiting for today since the beginning of spring because I was so impressed with the singles “Dangerous Woman” and “Let Me Love You.”

Dangerous Woman is for sure going on my list of favorite albums at the end of the year. Today is my birthday, too (YAY 22!) and this is a super awesome gift from the music world.

Maybe it’s because I still associate Ariana Grande with Sam and Cat but it’s still for me to consider her dangerous. She seems so sweet in real life too!

In honor of the release of Dangerous Woman, I’ve selected this amazing fan art by Hiago Silva I found on Instagram featuring Ariana with her latex bunny headgear. It’s inspired by the new album’s cover, and it’s pretty much a complete replica of it, which I love.

View the original fan art here and read this awesome interview Ariana did with Billboard.

April Favorites: 7 Year Nap, Vintage NYC & Pizza Kiss Cam

april faves

April was brutal.

I can’t decide what part of April 2016 was worse: the fact that the whole “celebrities die in threes” turned into fours (Prince, Doris Roberts, Chyna, Victoria Wood), the fact that all the shows I’ve been watching are going on hiatus, or the sad reality that Mother Nature is denying NYC proper spring weather.

Anyway, I managed to get excited about a few albums coming out in May, many of which are being teased with singles that were released in April. That and a few YouTube videos kept me going.

Here are my favorites in pop culture for the month of April 2016:

Favorite News Articles

1. This kid Marcus Lepage took a 7 year long nap. And documented it on Twitter.

2. Alexey Zakharov created a vintage NYC. I think it’s so cool that he was able to do this using photographs!

3. Pizza kisses. Because who needs another human for the kiss cam when you have pizza?

4. Ted Cruz’s twin. I could not deal when I saw the comment that said “Ted Cruz in drag on Maury.”

Favorite Music

1. “Coast to Coast” by Satin Jackets. Hands down, this song is part of one of the best albums I’ve heard this year so far!

2. “Better” by Meghan Trainor. So excited to hear Thank You in May.

3. “Let Me Love You” by Ariana Grande feat. Lil Wayne. Girl, you def should not be trippin’ because they sure “will be coming “from the right and the left, left left.”

4. “Guillotine” by Jon Bellion feat. Travis Mendes. Only Jon Bellion can make something as gruesome as a song about getting decapitated sound cheerful.

Favorite Celeb Instagrams

1. Taylor Swift is tearing it up in this iTunes commercial. And falling off treadmills.

2. Elvy Yost caught Jay Hayden dancing on the set of ABC’s The Catch. He’s got the moves but not the lyrics.

3. Ariana Grande’s new album track preview. Cannot. Wait.

Favorite TV Episodes

1. Limitless, “The Finale Part 2.” The only good thing that came out of all this is that Piper is safe.

2. The Catch, “The Princess and the I.P.” Let’s just hope Alice’s decision to save Ben doesn’t end up hurting her in the end.

3. Scandal, “Buckle Up.” That Mellie and Fitz moment made this one of my favorite episodes to date.

Favorite Youtube Videos

1. James Corden, Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Shaal make fools of themselves with mouthguards. I lost it with the bubbles bit.

2. Alonzo Lerone addresses Uma Kompton. This woman is literally a joke. “Sewerside”? Stahp.

3. Cats on leashes. Poor cat was being dragged down the sidewalk.

April Favorites: Detroit D, Square-Faced Dogs & Grace Helbig’s Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge

April Faves

Alrighty. April is over, May is here, and hopefully you’ve got those ridiculous Justin Timberlake “It’s Gonna Be May” meme laughs out of your system.

The beginning of April seemed kind of dull for pop culture news but things got interesting towards the end.

Here are my April favorites!

Favorite News Articles

1. Ariana Grande’s dad intervenes on Big Sean’s Instagram comment. Detroit Sean? Hmmmm… The D is not…lemme just leave that alone…

2. Square-faced dog haircuts. To all the dog owners in the world: how about no.

3. The Pinktax project. I’m glad this is being addressed.

4. A high schooler’s life in headlines. Hilarious.

Favorite Music

1. The Beach (Les Loups Remix) by PWNDTIAC feat. Krue. I just love this so much.

2. Say You Will by Trails and Ways. The amount of sexy in this song.

3. Can I by Alina Baraz and Galimatias. Only Alina Baraz can undress a person with her voice. New superpower officially unlocked.

4. All Time Low by Jon Bellion. He tried to fix his pride but “that sh*t’s broken.” Poor thing.

5. Let’s Get Slow by Aeroplane feat. Benjamin Diamond. You know summer is coming when you start hearing songs like this.

6. American Oxygen by Rihanna. Welcome to the new America.

4. Marcus Butler and Niomi Smart switch clothes. I can’t even.

Best Performances at the MTV #VMA2014

Last night, the MTV VMAs in Inglewood, California at The Forum was the place to be.

The night was filled with some serious hip shaking, booty twirling, crying, and pools of sweat from your favorite artists in pop, hip-hop, and R&B.

There was even a wardrobe malfunction. MTV needs to plan better for these last minute outfit changes between performances! Jeez!

If you missed the show, here are the top five VMA performances of the evening:

1. Opening performances (Triple Threat Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Jessie J): Oh, how the world wished that Nicki would just let the black dress fall open!

2. Taylor Swift, “Shake It Off”: I love how she rethinks jumping off the platform. Precious.

3. 5SOS, “Amnesia”: Not a fan of them or anything, but the sound really great live.

4. Maroon 5, “Maps”: Wondering where they are? Outdoor bandshell, baby!

Full performance here.

5. Beyonce Medley (Video Vanguard Performance): As predicted, it was flawless.

New Year’s Rockin’ Eve ’14 With Ryan Seacrest

new years rockin eve

New York City was the place to be last night for the biggest of the New Year’s Eve festivities.

Over in Times Square Ryan Seacrest and Jenny McCarthy hosted while Fergie held the fort down in Hollywood. Partiers at the Miami Fountainbleu had a good time with host Parrell Williams dancing the night away.

The performances were an absolute blast to watch. I could not contain myself in my little blanket while I sat and watched from the couch.

Best Performances:

1. (Live from Hollywood) Ariana Grande and Mac Miller, “The Way”: Of course, Ariana’s voice was perfection, Mac Miller looked like a creeper, and Ariana looked adorbs (and so tiny). I can’t seem to figure out her corset dress, though. I think they tried to make a skirt out of leftover silver Christmas bows and failed miserably.

2. (Live from Times Square) Icona Pop, “All Night/Just Another Night/ I Don’t Care”: Great performance of their hit single “I Don’t Care.” The crowd definitely got warm while jumping to that one. I loved their statement necklaces.

3. (Live from Hollywood) Enrique Iglesias, “I Like It”: The guitar rocker elements of the instrumentation worked well in his favor. Back in Times Square, Jenny McCarthy said, ” perder el muchacho camisa.” She wanted Enrique to take GIS shirt off. She clearly messed up that translation! “Oh yeah. I took Spanish in high school,” she continued. Sure.

4. (Live from Hollywood) Jennifer Hudson, “I Can’t Describe (How I Feel)”: Two things were on point, her body and her dancers!

5. (Live from Hollywood) Capital Cities, “Holiday” (Madonna Cover): Capital Cities put an 80s electropop spin on Madonna’s “Holiday.” I loved their matching outfits. And that trumpet player is freaking phenomenal.

6. (Live from Fountainbleu Miami) Pitbull, “Don’t Stop the Party/Sube las Manos Pa Arriba/ Timber”: Pitbull started the Miami party with one hell of a performance. Not sure why he was wearing motor gloves in the Miami heat though. The Brazilian themed festival-like vibe of “Sube Las Manos Pa Arriba” looked so fun as the crowd waved their Brazilian flags back and forth. The dancers were shaking their hips like an earthquake for “Timber.”

7. (Live from Times Square) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, “Thrift Shop/ Can’t Hold Us”: Macklemore gave the crowd a little thrift shop treat when he threw both of his red sneakers into the crowd. He even trusted the audience during his “Can’t Hold Us” crowd surf.

8. (Live from Hollywood) Robin Thicke, “Blurred Lines”: All the good girls danced their selves senseless when Robin Thicke performed “Blurred Lines” in a black vintage print suit. He was so chill, standing in the crowd for some of the performance.

9. (Live from Times Square) Miley Cyrus, “#GetItRight/Wrecking Ball”: The moment we’d all been waiting for. Miley Cyrus and the Sexy Sexies took the stage in Times Square 20 minutes before the ball dropped. The temperature dropped as well, forcing Miley to wear a fur coat on top of her fold glitter sequined outfit. She got emotional during “Wrecking Ball” remembering the hell of a year 2013 was for her.

2014

I hope you all enjoyed your New Year’s, and have an amazing 2014!!

Macy’s 87th Thanksgiving Day Parade

This morning, NBC brought the Thanksgiving celebration to all of our hearts with Macy’s 87th Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

macys parade

The parade was almost balloon-less this year due to the wind gusts in NYC today. Balloons were flown lower than usual as a precaution.

The festivities began on television at 9 a.m. with the Macy’s Great American Marching Band’s instrumental version of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us.”

It was a great start to the morning!

Here are ten other great performances/floats/balloons featured in the parade:

1. Kinky Boots “Raise You Up”/”Just Be”: The performance from the cast of the Broadway musical Kinky Boots stirred a bit of controversy…

Regardless, I think the performace was great. Those guys dance really well in high heeled boots! I do understand how that can be hard to explain to young children.

2. The Sound of Music “16 Going on 17” (Leisl and Rolf): The performance of “16 Going on 17” by Leisl and Rolf from The Sound of Music was simply adorable. The kiss at the end was so sweet!

3. All That! Cloggers: The all male group of cloggers from South Carolina did a fantastic job. Is there any chance you guys would be willing to let a female join in? (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

4. Cher Lloyd “I Wish”: Cher Lloyd performed her song “I Wish” while on board the Hess float this year. Loved it!

5. Richard Simmons: I think this one was more odd than great. Russel Simmons rode passed the green carpet inside of a tortoise while kicking his legs up and down. I don’t quite know how to understand this.

6. J.U.M.P.: Okay, I know some people didn’t like them, but I thought they were really cool. J.U.M.P. (Jumpers United for Macy’s Parade) skipped rope to Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding’s “I Need Your Love.” (Maybe I liked them so much because the only sport I can actually play well is jump rope. I felt a connection. What can I say?)

7. South Shore Drill Team: I thoroughly enjoyed the South Shore Drill’s routine to Usher’s “Euphoria.” They’ve got some great moves!

8. Despicable Me Cast: I can’t get enough of those cute little minions! The minions, Gru and the evil purple minion danced on their float to Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” a song from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack.

9. Ariana Grande “Last Christmas”: I hadn’t yet heard Ariana Grande’s version of “Last Christmas” before her performance on the Dora float this morning. I can’t say I didn’t like the R&B spin she put on the song!

10. Elf on the Shelf: The Elf on the Shelf balloon is one of the largest balloons to ever be part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I think this is the cutest elf I’ve ever seen!

As usual, the grand finale was Santa and Mrs. Claus, the cutest couple of the morning (well, afternoon at this point). Santa’s still looking healthy, and so does Mrs. Claus!

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Hanukkah! I’m thankful for all of my wonderful Whisper Box fans! You guys are awesome!

Have a great holiday!
