Gallery Mondays: “Art of Jazz” Mural at PAL Harlem

art of jazz pal harlem

I saw this vibrant mural on the side of the Police Athletic League (PAL) on the west side of Harlem a few weeks ago while headed to pick up some items I found in a Craigslist ad.

I just had to stop and understand what was happening in this mural. There’s a trumpet-playing man popping out of a phonograph, and it appears that the sound he’s producing sounds like swirls and flowers?

Basically summer in NYC during the Harlem Renaissance.

The mural, called “Art of Jazz,” was done by Creative Art Works. Learn more at www.creativeartworks.org.

Gallery Mondays: ‘Shadows & Substance’ by Marcia Haufrecht

Shadows & Substance | Marcia Haufrecht chashama 266

I was walking by Chashama 266 in Midtown West last month when I saw these really great paintings. I loved the summer vibes I got from them so I snapped a pic from the other side of the glass door.

I really need to make an appointment to see one of Chashama 266’s exhibits at some point!

Anyway, these were part of Marcia Haufrecht’s Shadows & Substance exhibit. It reminded me of all the Q53 bus rides I’m not going to miss this summer because I moved out of Queens. Therefore, I no longer have to board a crowded bus full of beach-goers.

Why does anyone want to go to the beach in this scorching heat anyway? The sand is going to burn you!

Be smart like the two in the painting on the far right and visit a lake instead.

Mid-Summer 2016 Remixed Playlist

girl-318581_1920

This summer has been quite hectic and very exciting for me as I’ve just moved to Manhattan! That also explains why this playlist is so late. I still can’t believe it’s over a month into the summer and I’m just getting around to this.

I’ve decided to try something a bit different for this year’s summer playlist (now a mid-summer playlist). Since I’m blogging from my new apartment, how about we shake things up a bit more with remixed versions of summer songs I love?

Enjoy the playlist on Spotify!

1. Tilted, Christine and the Queens (Paradis Remix). Let’s start this playlist off with a little summer hummin’.

2. Honest Affection, Kye Kye (Remix A). “A part of me just wanted to know…”

8. A Stranger Love, Classix (Salva Remix). You most definitely are not ready for that beat drop.

9. Show Me The Way, Penguin Prison (The Knocks Remix). What do you mean it’s “never gonna end”? Summer better end eventually. It’s too hot!

10. Impression of You, Giraffage, Viceroy feat. Patrick Baker (Electric Mantis Remix). Swiping through Tinder all summer long.

11. Sweet Ophelia, Zella Day (Gold Fields Remix). “Go up, up away…”

Gallery Mondays: Woodrow White’s ‘Dip’

Happy Memorial Day!

Lots of beaches and pools are opening today (and if not, they will be soon), marking the first unofficial day of summer.

Because of this, I’ve decided to feature Woodrow White’s painting Dip, which I saw back in 2014 at the Joshua Liner Gallery Your Favorite Artists Favorite Artist exhibit in NYC.

That vibrant green pool water and oscillation is so summer.

See more of Woodrow White’s work at www.woodrowwhite.com.

Summer 2015 Beach Tunes Playlist

beach tunes

When it’s hot and you’re tired of running up your light bill with the air conditioner, there’s only one natural way to cool off…

The beach.

Summer wouldn’t be the same without some fun music to chill out with, so whether you’re hosting a beach party or just getting some much needed R&R under the sun, here’s a beach tunes playlist!

1. Blue Hawaii, ASTR: Let me just say that I am extremely jealous of you if you’re vacationing in Hawaii this summer.

2. Dana Point, Wilhelm Tell Me: This song is just adorbs, and it’s not just because the title has my name in it.

3. Poster Girl, French Horn Rebellion: I can hear the waves reaching all time highs with this tune.

4. Another Day, Strange Talk: Dreamy summer vibes all around…

5. Starships, Nicki Minaj: “Let’s go to the beach each, let’s go get away…”

6. I’m Into You, Jennifer Lopez feat. Lil’ Wayne: For all the girls who can stop falling hard for those beach boys.

7. Embrace, Pnau: Endless summer bliss, brought to you by Pnau.

8. Burn, Ellie Goulding: Do not forget the sunscreen. Please. Let anything but your actual skin burn.

9. Maliblue, Darius: Every time I hear this one I think about James Bond on the beach. So espionage.

10. California Girls, Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dog: It’s not summer until this song comes on the radio.

11. Boys, Ashlee Simpson: For all the boys that can’t stop starin.’

12. Classic, The Knocks feat. Powers: “Come to me baby, don’t be shy.” 😉

13. Sunlight, Bag Raiders: I really hope this summer drips pure sunlight.

14. Rendezvous (Saint Pepsi Remix), La Plage: Those instrumentals in the verses are just excitement central, aren’t they?

Have a happy and safe summer 2015!

Magic! Live @ Irving Plaza #FashionRocksFrontRow

IMAG0336

On Friday, August 29th, right before the Labor Day weekend festivities, a Canadian reggae-pop band decided to bring a bit of magic to the end of our summer.

The Magic! concert was powered by the new LG G3 at Irving Plaza. I am again in debt to 1iota for the tickets my friend and I acquired for the show.

Before the show began, we were able to take some really cool photos in front of the LG G3 billboard backdrop. Super cool stuff!

While we waited in front of the stage for Magic! to perform, DJ K Styles spinned some sassy beats for us. I was pleased to see a female DJ for a change.

At 2pm, it was time to get down with to some reggae with lead singer Nasri and the rest of the Magic! gang.

The band opened with “No Evil,” Nasri ending the song making an X sign with his arms.

Can I just say that Nasri has the most amazing pelvic movements the world has ever seen! He’s like, the Elvis of reggae-pop!

Nasri, can you take me clubbing in Canada? Is that a thing that can happen?

The rest of the set list included “Mama Didn’t Raise No Fool,” “Paradise,” “How Do You Want to Be Remembered,” and their upcoming single “Let Your Hair Down.”

Speaking of hair, Nasri has gorgeous locks. Brb, still swooning.

The girls got an extra special shout out hen the band performed a revamped reggae-tastic cover of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” They know what they’re doing, man.

The show ended with “Rude,” the song on everyone’s tongue this summer. Everyone went nuts in the crowd.

This was such an awesome way to end the summer. Thanks again for the tickets, 1iota!

Luckily, the concert was livestreamed, so you can watch it online here!

This Week in Music: Hilary Duff is Back and “Chasing the Sun”

If it’s really been seven years then I’m really getting old!

After taking the longest break ever from the music industry, Hilary Duff is back with a new song and music video called “Chasing the Sun.”

Seven years brings us to a overworked and unimpressed Hilary Duff as she lugs over to her cubicle at work. Her hair is up in a bun, rimmed-nerd glasses are on, and she wears a cute black and white polka dot blouse.

Seems like the corporate world isn’t for our little Lizzie McGuire babe though, because she longs to be out at the beach for the day “chasing the sun.”

The song, written by Colbie Caillat, has a very old-school chilled vibe with heavy acoustics and light percussion.

“Love the life I live, and I will live the life I love, open up my eyes and I will take whatever comes,” she sings in the bridge as her hair flies around her face on the beach.

I liked Matthew Rolston’s video a lot more than I liked the song itself. The concept was very well thought out from beginning to end.

My favorite parts were the “office coffee cocktail” and the “conference splish-splash.” Too funnny!

Maybe it’s because I’m still enamored with her more upbeat and mature 2007 album Dignity, but I don’t think all the hype was really worth it.

I hope she blends her 2007 sound with tracks like this one on her upcoming album.

Live vicariously this summer through Hilary Duff in the video below!
