This Week in Music: Capital Cities’ “Kangaroo Court” Music Video

The Kangaroo Court

The music video for “Kangaroo Court” by Capital Cities was released today!

“Kangaroo Court” is the second single off of the Capital Cities album, In a Tidal Wave of Mystery.

If you’ve never heard any of the amazing 80s electro-pop music created by Capital Cities, I recommend you do your ears a favor and check them out.

Although “Kangaroo Court” isn’t my top favorite on the album, it’s definitely a fun song to listen to, with its beautiful trumpet melodies and hard drums.

The video just adds to the fun, danceable qualities of this song!

The plot line for the music video is very interesting, and goes quite well with the lyrics of the song. If I could describe it in one line, it would be, “The story of a zebra who just wanted to have a little fun.”

Kangaroo Court News

And no, this is not a zebra as in wildlife zebras. This is a human zebra, who disguises himself as a mustang to get into a club where zebras are banned.

A club called The Kangaroo Court.

There are ten things I love about this video:

1. Darren Criss. Oh my God. Is he not the hottest dog?!

2. The synchronization between the drum beats and hand movements (when the zebra knocks on the club door for the second time, and again when Darren Criss bangs his fist on the table at the club).

3. The zebra’s car. He drives a mini cooper. Complete with GPS!

4. The zebra’s fake ID. “Imma Mustang”? Couldn’t have found a better fake name?!

5. The trumpet player at the Kangaroo Court. He’s phenomenal.

6. Shannon Woodward. She looks so gorgeous in all of her scenes, and her dance moves are beyond sexy. (Coincidentally, they get sexier right before the bridge when the female voice sings “I can’t do sexy.”)

7. When the zebra sings in the courtroom,

I commit the crime of wasting time
Always trying to rhyme
Yes, I am guilty
But don’t misunderstand me
I admit defeat, then I move my feet
My history will never be repeated
I won’t ever be repeated.

This is the only time the zebra sings in the video, and its well waited for. Too perfect!

8. The way the the zebra is killed. It was a very artistic move to use red confetti, and it definitely worked. The party vibe of the song continues in that scene even though this part of the video is supposed to be sad.

9. The reference to lions being the “King of the Jungle” during the scene where the zebra is watching a lion prey on a zebra on television and also when the lion is served zebra on a plate.

10. The harp at the end. The beautiful harp melody does not exist in the studio version of this track, but its a nice touch to the end of this video.

Did I mention that all of the characters in this video are human animals?

You’ll have to see it to believe it.

This Week in Music: Maroon 5’s “Love Somebody” Music Video

love somebodyA week ago, on May 14th, Maroon 5 released the fourth single off of their 2012 album Overexposed. Unfortunately, I only learned of this today.

“Love Somebody” is a song about longing to have a romantic partner.  The beat of the song is very calm, with a soft fluttering guitar rift throughout and a medium paced tempo held by the bass drum.

In the chorus, Adam Levine sings,

“I really wanna love somebody
I really wanna dance the night away
I know we’re only half way there
But you take me all the way, you take me all the way
I really wanna touch somebody
I think about you every single day
I know we’re only half way there
But you take me all the way, you take me all the way.”

It’s all very sweet and romantic.

The lyrics really capture what it feels like to be alone right from the beginning of the song, singing, “I know your insides are feeling so hollow. And it’s a hard pill for you to swallow.”

Hard pill to swallow indeed. Especially when your throat isn’t fully intact!

The video features the band, Adam Levine, and a mystery woman (actress Gemma Palombo), in all white, camouflaging with the white backdrop. As they touch themselves, or as someone touches them, a gray paint covers their body, revealing them little by little.

It’s creepy and sexual at the same time.

How did they come up with this idea? Is it because in the lyrics it says, “I know we’re only half way there but you can take me all the way”? Halfway as in half composed?!

I’ve loved this song ever since first hearing it during the summer of 2012. Never did I ever think the video would be like this.

I even sent the video to my friend this morning, an Adam Levine lover, and she responded:

“The f*** is this sh*t?!”

So I’m not the only one.

All you Adam Levine fangirls, watch out, because you’re gonna wish you were Gemma Palombo being touched by Adam Levine, especially when she pushes him onto that chair.

Jesus.

One thing I don’t really understand about the video is the fact that towards the end, Adam Levine and Gemma Palombo both work to erase the paint on her so she disappears.

Why would he want to erase her if he’s singing that he wants to love somebody?!

Perhaps its because “If [he] fall[s] for [her he’ll] never recover” and “never be the same”?

Or maybe he realizes that she doesn’t want to “stay, stay with [him] tonight”…

Either way, enjoy the video. Don’t let it creep you out too much.

Album Review: Demi Lovato’s ‘Demi’

Image

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013 marked the release of Demi Lovato’s senior album, Demi.

This excited me, because any mention of this girl opening her mouth to belt out a tune is an opportunity that should not be taken for granted!

Demi took to the streets of NYC to promote her album on the day of its release. “Buy it on iTunes!” she kept screaming at the passersby.

This girl knows how to get the attention of the New Yorker!

Ex-boyfriend Joe Jonas tweeted, “Congrats @ddlovato on the new record! So happy for you!”

Aww! See? There’s no hard feelings!

Rumor has it that some of the songs on the album are about her ex, Wilmer Valderrama. Oooo, JUICY!

Which ones do you think are about him? “Shouldn’t Come Back”? ”

The album is currently number two on iTunes.

Below is the track listing:

1. Heart Attack

2. Made in the USA

3. Without the Love

4. Neon Lights

5. Two Pieces

6. Nightingale

7. In Case

8. Really Don’t Care (feat. Cher Lloyd)

9. Fire Starter

10. Something That We’re Not

11. Never Been Hurt

12. Shouldn’t Come Back

13. Warrior

If bought at Target, the album features a bonus track titled, “I Hate You, Don’t Leave Me.”

The next single is rumored to be “Made in the USA.” Can’t wait!

I had a listen and put together a video review for your viewing pleasure.

Enjoy!

The Very Viral “Harlem Shake”

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few weeks, you’ve probably heard about the “Harlem Shake” videos that are taking over YouTube. They began in early February 2013, and I have to admit, I can’t get enough of them!

The “Harlem Shake” videos are usually performed with one person dancing to the fifteen second intro of Baauer’s track titled “Harlem Shake” as a group of people sit around him or her doing busy work such as texting, reading etc. When the beat drops, there’s a jump cut to the entire group dancing like crazies for another fifteen seconds. The crazy dancing ranges from plain old jumping around to flailing one’s body parts all over the place. The best videos include people wearing random costumes. It looks extremely fun, and practically anyone can do it.

As reported on USA Today, “According to Kevin Allocca, YouTube trends manager, Harlem Shake video uploads have skyrocketed in the last few days. He writes that as of Feb. 11, 12,000 Harlem Shake videos have been posted this month” About 4,000 “Harlem Shake” videos are uploaded daily.

The man behind the music, Baauer, an electronic musician from Brooklyn, is mind-blown by the success these videos are bringing to his single. “Harlem Shake” reached number 1 on the US iTunes chart and number two on iTunes in Australia and the UK.

Here are a few of my favorite “Harlem Shake” videos! (In no particular order)

1. Harlem Shake Ryan Seacrest, Kendall & Kylie Jenner Edition

This “Harlem Shake” video was filmed in the studio with Ryan Seacrest, the Jenner sisters Kendall and Kylie and some other people from the radio station. It starts off with a guy wearing a sweater that says “Rich Fashion Advisory” walking from behind where Kendall and Kylie are sitting while thrusting his hands in the air. When the beat drops, everyone goes wild and the funniest person in the video is the guy wearing what looks like a frog suit who’s bouncing a turkey up and down. Hilarious!

2. Harlem Shake (Radio Station Edition) | talkSPORT

This one starts off with a guy wearing a pink onesie and a motorcycle helmet bouncing around casually. When the beat drops, boy you’re in for a laugh! I can’t tell which is funnier: the guy in the bubble wrap, the guy with the scream mask and the teapot, or the guy with the fisherman hat who’s banging the table with God knows what in his hand!

3. Harlem Shake Onesie Parents

As soon as I saw the baby during the intro for this video I knew it would be hilarious. A woman in a pink robe and motorcycle helmet flails her arms around while standing behind the couch as a man plays with a baby. When the beat drops, things get seriously weird and funny. Some extra people appear in onesie pajamas to join the fun, but the two to keep your eyes on are the man in the zebra onesie and the woman in the red onesie PJs. After the 0:25 second mark, these two are the only ones left in the room and they seem to be having a plant fight. You have to see it for yourself to understand why I can hardly type as I describe this video!

4. Harlem Shake @ Facebook

Facebook goes against the norm in their version of the “Harlem Shake”. The intro features a guy wearing a yellow smiley face head dancing while another guy wearing a mariachi hat bicycles around him in circles. Once the beat drops an extremely large crowd of people from the Facebook offices appear and the funniest two to watch for are the person in the penguin costume and the guy lying face down on the pavement.

5. UGA Men’s Swim & Dive Harlem Shake

I don’t know how they managed to do it but they did! The UGA Men’s Swim team did the “Harlem Shake” underwater! To be frank, the fact that it looks awkward while trying to wiggle around in a pool makes this version amusing on its own. Add a fifteen second intro with a guy on a table wearing nothing but swim briefs and a mask and you’re in for a good laugh. The guy under the table when the beat drops will have you rolling on the floor laughing!

6. Harlem Shake (Grandma Edition)

The guy in the fifteen minute intro can’t even keep himself from laughing as he dances! He knows we won’t be able to contain ourselves when the beat drops! I’ll just let Jackthegamer02’s comment sum this one up for you: “The [grandma] on the right looks like she’s trying to swat a fly”!

7. The Harlem Shake v69 (foreveralone edition)

This last “Harlem Shake” video features one of my favorite YouTubers, Connor Manning, doing the shake forever alone style. He breaks all the rules, rebel that he is, by starting off the video with a fifteen second intro of him sitting on a couch sipping a drink. When the beat drops, he put on the most ridiculous face imaginable and sways across the screen all alone! It’s so awkward and fun! I love it!

Which “Harlem Shake” video is your favorite?
