Lorde’s Birthday Wish and “Yellow Flicker Beat” Music Video

Today, Lorde turned 18!

Gosh, she’s so young.

Wondering what the singer wished for?

Less acne.

About 10 seconds into her big day, Lorde took to her Tumblr page, stating,

it’s midnight, and i’m all of ten seconds into being eighteen. the first thing that came into my head just now is that i thought i would have less acne at eighteen.. some things never change. lol. happy birthday me.

Girl, I feel your pain.

This isn’t the first time Lorde made a public statement about her acne problems.

In a comparison between two photos of the singer taken during a concert performance, Lorde took a stand for her imperfections.

“I find this curious — two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. remember flaws are ok :-)”

Lorde also has no shame in posting photos of her face covered in acne cream. She doesn’t try to hide her acne. She just wishes it weren’t there.

But I’m not gonna lie to you, girl. I’m 20 and I still have acne!

You just keep being you, and your fans see past your acne into your beautiful soul.

It also seems that Lorde likes to give on her birthday rather than receive.

The music video for The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack song “Yellow Flicker Beat” is finally here!

Woohoo!

Enjoy your day, Lorde!

And for the fans, enjoy her new music video for “Yellow Flicker Beat.”

This Week in Music: Hilary Duff is Back and “Chasing the Sun”

If it’s really been seven years then I’m really getting old!

After taking the longest break ever from the music industry, Hilary Duff is back with a new song and music video called “Chasing the Sun.”

Seven years brings us to a overworked and unimpressed Hilary Duff as she lugs over to her cubicle at work. Her hair is up in a bun, rimmed-nerd glasses are on, and she wears a cute black and white polka dot blouse.

Seems like the corporate world isn’t for our little Lizzie McGuire babe though, because she longs to be out at the beach for the day “chasing the sun.”

The song, written by Colbie Caillat, has a very old-school chilled vibe with heavy acoustics and light percussion.

“Love the life I live, and I will live the life I love, open up my eyes and I will take whatever comes,” she sings in the bridge as her hair flies around her face on the beach.

I liked Matthew Rolston’s video a lot more than I liked the song itself. The concept was very well thought out from beginning to end.

My favorite parts were the “office coffee cocktail” and the “conference splish-splash.” Too funnny!

Maybe it’s because I’m still enamored with her more upbeat and mature 2007 album Dignity, but I don’t think all the hype was really worth it.

I hope she blends her 2007 sound with tracks like this one on her upcoming album.

Live vicariously this summer through Hilary Duff in the video below!

This Week in Music: Colbie Caillat Likes You With Your Makeup Off and Your Hair Down

Colbie Caillat’s new music video for the song “Try” is both sentimental and empowering.

“Try” is a ballad the Caillat co-wrote with Babyface over a year ago. The premise of the song is embracing natural beauty, and it features a medium tempo piano melody that will stay with you long after the song is over.

In the music video, several women in plain white tank tops mouth the words to the song as they reveal their make-up free faces.

Caillat also stips down to her bare face, even removing her hair extensions.

The real shocker for me was realizing that this gorgeous woman is actually bald.

Try video

My God, I hope I look that good bald!

Of all the song’s lyrics, I love the last verse the most. “Take your make up off, let your hair down, take a breath, look into the mirror, at yourself, don’t you like you? Cause I like you,” Caillat sings as the piano melody begins winding down.

It’s refreshing to see some natural beauty every once in a while. So ladies, take a moment today to admire yourself in the mirror after removing your makeup.

This Week in Music: Shakira is on Fire in “Empire” Music Video

Shakira Empire FireThis is the empire, and Shakira is our empress.

The music video for Shakira’s single “Empire” off of her brand new self-titled album Shakira. is very different from her usual style.

Although this video lacks Shakira’s infamous sexy hip shaking, the beautiful vocals and glorious camera work make this one of her best projects yet.

“Empire” begins with Shakira sitting in front of a tan colored wall wearing a tan colored dress and nude makeup. The vocals in the beginning of the song are very soft, almost as if she’s whispering a folk tale to a young child.

The scene changes to Shakira standing at the door of a church in a wedding dress as the guests await her entrance.

Shakira Empire Wedding

I was sort of confused at first, because I know Shakira is one of those celebrities who doesn’t want to marry until she’s 60 (poor Gerard Pique).

But then she does the unthinkable: she drops the bouquet and runs away.

The song begins to escalate as Shakira sings “and I’m like…” before bursting into a powerful chorus of  “Oooh”s.

The runaway bride proceeds to frolic in a meadow with beautiful dandelions flowing in the breeze around her. After this seemingly innocent act, she begins dancing on the church steps with a fire running down her dress.

Shakira Empire Meadow

I think I could watch Shakira frolic in the meadow all day. It’s just so beautiful.

The meadow scenes and the scenes where Shakira is in what looks like a ruined and abandoned church with leaves strewn all over the floor wearing a black winged dress are probably the most majestic in the entire video.

Shakira also does this crazy back-bend, bridge-like thing with her body towards the end of the video.

Is there anything this Colombian beauty can’t do?!

I really love the song and the video. It was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Check out her new album, Shakira. on Spotify and enjoy the “Empire” music video!

This Week In Music: Karmin’s “I Want It All” Music Video

I Want it All

Karmin’s Amy and Nick in “I Want It All” music video

#TheSassIsReal!

Couple and pop duo Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan of Karmin are back with a sassy new hit titled “I Want It All,” featuring the jazziest of melodies.

The song features a ear-gasmic crescendo of “da da das” in the intro, which carries throughout the rest of the song as well. The chorus becomes a party when the trumpet melodies come flooding in, mixing perfectly with Amy’s voice.

In the music video, it appears that Amy “want[s] it all,” but there’s a gold plated wall blocking her from taking hold of her desires?

I Want it All 2

Fortunately, the gold wall doesn’t stop Amy, Nick and the supporting dancers. The groove of this song coupled with the old-school jazz themed music video will make you feel like you can have it all, right there on the dance floor, even while dancing on roller skates.

Yes, the video contains roller skate dancing. No, just the dancers, not Amy and Nick, I’m afraid.

I Want It All 3

The most interesting thing to realize about “I Want It All” is the fact that in it, Amy does not rap a single line. This could be a problem for fans who love her female rapper techniques most.

Luckily, the music video might be just what the doctor ordered.

Enjoy!

This Week In Music: Chromeo’s “Come Alive” feat. Toro y Moi Music Video

come alive

Chromeo is back with some new music this year, starting with their new single “Come Alive” featuring Toro y Moi, a song from their upcoming album White Women.

The song features the standard funky synth chords that define Chromeo’s style. It’s a medium tempo dance tune that will most definitely make you let loose a bit after a long day at work.

I’m sure that’s exactly what they were going for.

For those of you who are familiar with Chromeo’s music videos, this one will come as no surprise to you. The “Come Alive” music video features sexy female mannequins that come to life.

At the beginning of the video, Dave 1 is waiting for what I would assume is his date for the night. He sits on the front of his car with a bouquet of roses, and when he gets a text message saying that his date can’t make it, he throws the flowers to the ground.

It’s a very dramatic moment. The fatal throw of those innocent flowers really hit home.

A few seconds later he is lured into a boutique by a store mannequin where Toro y Moi is the janitor, and P-Thugg is the security guard.

come alive

I won’t spoil it for you, but let’s just say that Dave 1 and Toro y Moi get a little bit too frisky with those mannequins. Thinking about it too much will make it seem really creepy. Just try to laugh about it!

come alive

The dancing was electro-funk perfection, as is the song in its entirety.

My only complaint is Toro y Moi’s hair. What is going on with that? Please cut it shorter!

Enjoy the music video!

This Week in Music: Cher Lloyd’s “I Wish” Music Video ft. T.I.

cher i wish

British singer Cher Lloyd premiered the music video for her song “I Wish” ft. T.I. today, September 24th.

This song is definitely an upgrade from her 2012 hit “Want U Back.” After listening to that song on the radio too many times, her grunting gets a bit irritating.

The critics say that Cher Lloyd’s “I Wish” is the female version of the 1995 Skee-Lo song of the same name.

I love it.

The song has a very jazzy, upbeat feel with its trumpet melody and fast bass drum tempo. I love how the trumpets are distorted for the outro, as Cher laughs.

Cher Lloyd and T.I.

Cher Lloyd looks gorgeous in the music video. She plays a waitress at a lounge bar who lusts after T.I., a player who arrives with a group of women falling all over him.

In the song, Cher wishes to be like these girls so that T.I. would notice her. She sings:

I wish I was tall, I wish I was fast
Wish I could shop with a bag full of cash’
Cause If I want you, I gotta have that
(Come, come kiss me boy)
I wish I had style, I wish I had flash
I wish I woke up with a butt and a rack’
Cause If I want you, I gotta have that
(Come, come kiss me boy)

And no, Cher did not kiss T.I. in this music video.

I love the parts where Cher tries to give herself bigger boobs. The first occurs in the kitchen, where she places two golden peppers over her chest.

cher peppers

The second time, she’s in the ladies room trying to stuff toilet paper in her bra.

cher tissue boobs

Classy.

After her shift is over, Cher dons a gold glitter jacket and heels. She walks out of the lounge looking sexier than ever, and T.I.’s eyes follow her.

Of course all of his lady friends are jealous and thoroughly confused.

The dancers in the parking lot scenes were fun to watch. I do wish that Cher could have showed off some of her dance moves in this video.

My only complaint about this music video is the way the scenes skipped by so quickly. None of the scenes last more than 3-5 seconds. It was kind of jarring.

Overall, though, it was fun to watch.

Enjoy the music video!

Don’t forget to catch Cher Lloyd on MTV’s Nikki & Sara LIVE at 11:00 PM ET and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on NBC at 11:35 PM ET!
