California Day 6: So Long, West Coast

Down on the West Coast, they love their movies
Their golden gods, and rock and roll groupies
And you’ve got the music, you’ve got the music in you, don’t you?

– Lana Del Rey

My final hours in California consisted of eating breakfast at the hotel and watching the morning news on ABC 7. We checked out a little after 10 a.m. in hopes of getting the rental car back in time to arrive at LAX by 11:30.

The traffic could have been worse. We managed through make it through security at 11. I had to go through twice because I had forgotten to finish drinking all the water in my aluminum bottle.

Oops.

There was a huge storm in the Northeast, so the flight was delayed for a half hour. The gate also changed about 4o minutes before we were allowed to board.

The flight back seemed shorter. My aunt ended up sitting in isolation two rows in front of my mom, dad, and I. If it were up to me I would have traded her for my dad, because he kept stealing my cheez-its.

We entertained ourselves with in-flight entertainment for the majority of the flight. The Castle rerun marathon was on TNT, so I was hooked for three hours before falling asleep.

I made sure to put my headphones back in before landing because the clogged ear life is not fun at all.

The runway was still wet when we landed at JFK, but the sky was clear. We made it home in a cab a little before midnight. I wasn’t as jetlagged as I thought I’d be the next day when I woke up for work.

Overall, I had a super fun time on the West Coast. I hope to visit again soon!

California Day 5: LA Traffic, Getty Museum & Bubble Tea

I think you lost it in the Hollywood Hills …

– Hilary Duff

My mom decided we should try to go visit the Getty Museum again since we couldn’t get parking when we attempted to visit on day 2 of our trip.

I was surprised the traffic wasn’t awful on our first few days in California, but I suppose it was because of the holiday. As soon as the festivities were over, we had to endure the notoriously terrible traffic jams on the highway, especially since we were tourists that were too afraid to get stuck in the express carpool lane for fear of missing our exit on the GPS.

Our attempt to visit the Getty Museum was successful. The museum is located in the hills, so we had to take a tram from the parking lot to the museum after parking the car.

We ended up spending about 2 1/2 hours there looking at European art from the 16th and 17th centuries, strolling though the beautiful gardens, and viewing some animal photography.

We accidentally ended up in the family room of the museum where we found this bed and some books on it.

Of course I couldn’t get enough of the gardens. It looked and smelled amazing!

On the way back to the hotel, my aunt realized that there was a bubble tea shop across the street from where we were staying in Montebello. I was so happy. You don’t understand how bad I wanted to find boba in California!

I got a mango flavored bubble tea that evening with my dinner. My day was made.

Stay tuned for day 6 (the final day of my California adventure :/) tomorrow!

California Day 4: Shopping, ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ & The Golden State Cafe

L.A., L.A, baby …

– The Jonas Brothers

Day 4 in California was the day I’d been waiting for—seeing Bradley Cooper and Andrew Garfield at a live taping of The Late Late Show with James Corden!

But before the show we went shopping at Ross and I found this cute LBD that comes with a scarf for $6.

I could not leave without it.

Then my mom, aunt, and I went to the Dollar Tree next door and I went a bit nail strip crazy. I’ve never seen so many brands in one store. Kill me next time.

We were due at CBS Studio City at 3pm, so we arrived at around 2:30 just in case we got stuck in traffic. And guess what?

There was no freaking parking. So we had to pay money to park at The Grove a few minutes away.

Anyway…

We stood in the blazing sun for almost 40 minutes before they let us into the waiting area. At least 1iota was nice enough to give us umbrellas and bottled water. Still, I have a lovely tan line the shape of my flats on my feet from the sun.

But honestly, it was totally worth it! James Corden is so cool and weird, and Bradley Cooper danced for us, and Andrew Garfield let his hair out of the man bun (as you probably saw on the episode), and I was so happy to have been breathing the same air as all these Hollywood people….

Gosh, Bradley Cooper’s dancing though. *swoon*

After the show I took this photo with my dad by the water installation at CBS.

And then we went to The Golden State Cafe for burgers, fries, and grilled chicken. I was served an enormous bowl of fries that I couldn’t finish, so I took it back to the hotel.

Thank you James Corden and 1iota for making my trip to California amazeballs!

Stay tuned for day 5 tomorrow!

California Day 3: Hollywood Walk of Fame, Wattles Park & Pool Time

Could be New York, maybe Hollywood and Vine …

– Hilary Duff

For Labor Day in California, we spent some time on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I wanted to find Sandra Bullock’s star but my parents and aunt got tired of walking before we were anywhere close.

Cue photos with Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, Mariska Hargitay, and Carol Burnett’s stars:

And then I was teased with a glimpse of the Hollywood sign on the way back to the car. I still can’t believe I didn’t get to go up there 😥

Then we had a somewhat failed attempt in the Hollywood Hills at the Wattles Park and Mansion. Since it was a holiday, it was locked but the gardens were open.

We also saw a pomegranate tree. My mom picked one, and we didn’t actually open it until two days later. (It didn’t taste very well).

When we got back to the hotel we came to the conclusion that we deserved a bit of pool time.

IMAG3409

There was a cute kitty near the deeper end when we got there. I scared it away by getting too close with my phone.

The water was too cold for me, so I settled with just dipping my feet in.

Stay tuned for day 4 tomorrow!

California Day 2: Shopping, Hammer Museum & More Shopping

Los Angeles, Los Angeles, don’t ever let them change you …

– The Bird and the Bee

Since I screwed up real bad the day before with the whole walking to the store thing, my mom and my aunt vowed to never again walk long distances for the duration of our trip.

My dad decided to drive us to the mall complex after finally hearing about our fiasco when he woke up the next morning.

First we stopped at this gem of a grocery store called El Super. WHY DO THEY NOT HAVE ONE OF THESE ON THE EAST COAST?! THE PRODUCE IS SO CHEAP!!

After buying wayyyyy too much food for the fridge in the hotel, my mom realized she needed a knife to cut the fruit so we went to the 97¢ store to get one. I also ended up buying some nail polish because the nail strips I was wearing were already coming off.

Then we went over to Kmart where I found this lovely top for $5! They charge tax on clothes in California though. :/ So it was like $5.50.

After we went back to the hotel to drop our stuff off, we took a trip to LA to visit the Hammer Museum. As soon as we got there, my dad and I went crazy on their awesome spin top chairs. (My aunt refused to sit on them, and my mom only sat for like one spin before screaming her head off).

We walked around the galleries and then my parents enjoyed a game of ping pong. I was terrible at it.

IMAG3376

Then we tried to visit the Getty Museum but the parking lot was full so we went back to the hotel. Before heading to our room, we asked the friendly bus driver on the street nearby how much the bus costs.

$1.10 guys. NEW YORK MTA, GET IT TOGETHER!

My mom, aunt and I decided to let my dad take a nap while we went to the Shops at Montebello on the bus. I bought these Seventeen brand oxford shoes at Sears. I love them so much! They’re like sneaker boots, if that makes any sense. So comfortable too!

Stay tuned for day 3 (Labor Day) tomorrow!

California Day 1: Walking to the Wrong Store Location in Montebello

Last week I went to California with my family! I’ve decided to document my 6-day trip with a daily blog post of my adventures. We stayed in a hotel in Montebello, and visited Los Angeles for the majority of our sightseeing trips. Here’s what we did on day one!

Hoped off the plane at LAX with a dream and my cardigan …

– Miley Cyrus

After a long flight and a long wait for the rental car, we made it to our hotel to find that our room wasn’t ready. So, to kill time, we went to the Domino’s Pizza place in Montebello because by then it was already 6 p.m. New York time and we hadn’t yet eaten anything since breakfast.

Cue the pizza pig out.

(Side note: Check out this ginormous fish in the hotel lobby’s fish tank!)

IMAG3346

After the pizza we decided we wanted to fill our mini fridge with some groceries, but my dad had already dozed off and my mom was too scared to drive as a tourist in California. So we went by foot. The walk was only supposed to be 20 minutes long, so my mom and aunt agreed to it.

We stopped at Starbucks for free cups of water. The Starbucks in Montebello has a drive thru! Whattttt!

The scenery in Montebello is so gorgeous. Everyone has such beautiful shrubs and gardens.

IMAG3352

We even saw a lime tree!

IMAG3354

So after 20 minutes of complaining about the crappy pathway we had to walk on to get there (the concrete was severely damaged by tree roots), we finally get to the last turn on the Google Maps directions.

But instead of the supermarket we ended up at the supermarket warehouse, which doesn’t sell to the public. Oops.

My mom and aunt were so pissed. We tried waiting for the bus to go back but it never came. Until we started walking again.

Figures.

Anyway, we found a cute kitty in the Starbucks parking lot on the way back to the hotel.

IMAG3362

The time difference caused me to fall asleep at 9 p.m. and wake up at 6 a.m. California time. #Jetlagged.

Stay tuned for day 2!
