Gallery Mondays: “A Night Out” by Billy

a night out billy big apple fest

Maybe if I post about fall-related things all week the weather will cool down in time for the first day of autumn on Friday.

A few months ago, I came across this really fun apple sculpture while walking through the Meatpacking District in NYC. Called “A Night Out” this ginormous acrylic apple by artist Billy sits right outside of the Dos Caminos location on Hudson Street.

After doing some research, I found that this is not the only apple sculpture that fell from the tree (I’m trying to be funny, bear with me).

Back in 2004, the Meatpacking District held a Big Apple Fest where artists decorated dozens of apple sculptures like the one pictured above to be scattered around NYC from August-October as public art and then auctioned to benefit charities.

Sadly, the Big Apple Fest didn’t catch on as an annual event. Help me refrain from wishing it wasn’t so.

Back to “A Night Out.” This sculpture is such a cool mix of cubism and pop art, which is the case for most of Billy’s work. The characters on it kind of remind me of the ones in the TV show Futurama. What I didn’t notice when I saw it in person was the writing in white wrapped around the top portion of the apple. From the photo I took, I can make out “Dos Caminos” and “Blue Fin.”

I wonder if this apple sculpture was originally set up in Times Square where another Dos Caminos is located right next to Blue Fin?!

Gallery Mondays: Lady Gaga’s ‘ARTPOP’ Pop Up Gallery NYC

gaga popup gallery edit

November 2013 was a pretty exciting month in NYC because Lady Gaga had decided to have an ARTPOP Pop Up Gallery in the Meatpacking District for three days to celebrate the release of her then upcoming album.

I visited the gallery along with a coworker, and we had such a good time taking pictures in the photo booth and playing the new Just Dance featuring “Applause” (I was terrible at it!).

The gallery was filled with Koons balls,  photographs from the album, walls covered in lyrics, and some of Lady Gaga’s finest music video costumes.

I love the “Hands Bra.” It’s my second fave costume in the ARTPOP music video (first is the seashells!). I’d never dare wear it myself, though.

High Line NYC

Yesterday I went to the High Line in NYC with a few of my girlfriends from high school!

High Line Pic

The High Line, an urban linear elevated park located along 10th Avenue,  is quite the interesting sight. It used to be a street level railway in the 1840s. Too many accidents occurred between the trains and the traffic, causing 10th Avenue to became known as Death Avenue. Later the train became an elevated rail to prevent anymore accidents.

In 2009 the railway was transformed into a lovely park complete with statues, flowers, and grassy areas to enjoy the summer sun. The view is fabulous!

You can still see some of the rails. It’s so cool!

Three highlights of our time at the High Line yesterday:

1. The Goshka Macuga bust of Colin Powell. The following pictures should explain why.

As my friend Xiran said as we all lay on the grass, “Nature is perfect.”

Indeed it is, my dear. Indeed. Especially at the High Line.

*(As you can tell, Xiran cannot take a normal picture. But that’s just one of the many reasons why we love her.)*

If you’re ever in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan near 10th ave and 14th Street, you should totally visit the High Line. You won’t regret it. It’s beautiful!

Check out the official site for the High Line.

Enjoy some of the footage I took while there!!
