Brief Interview and Collab with The Amna Ali Boutique

A few months ago, I found out a fellow Her Campus Blogger Network member named Amna Ali started her own boutique online. Amna is a Chicago-based blogger, engineer, fashionista, and jewelry designer. Her boutique, called The Amna Ali Boutique, sells gorgeous handmade bracelets in fun vibrant colors.

I asked her if she wanted to be featured on my blog and she not only agreed, but she also decided to send me a bracelet set and name it after my blog!

The set is called “Whisper Box Bella,” and you can get it here. Keep reading for the interview I did with Amna!

Me: Why did you decide to start a collection?

Amna Ali: Ever since I can remember, I always have had a love for designing. Whether it’s designing my room, my own website, logos, my graduation card… I just love designing it! I honestly could say I have an eye for these things. I love playing with colors and putting things together. If I don’t like the color combination, I’ll start all over again from scratch. Even though I took the route to be a software engineer in life, I secretly have always wanted to be the next top designer! Every child has a dream. They want to be a super star, an actress, a model…it sounds crazy when we say it as we get older, but I never believed it was impossible. When I was overweight and over 200 pounds, I thought it was impossible to ever lose it, and drop 65 pounds, but I did it. I had a goal, I wanted it so badly, and I didn’t stop working towards it until I reached my goal. Even when I reached it, I set myself higher goals. I never gave up. Now, when it comes to my outfit and the accessories I wear with it is what truly shows off my style. One thing I caught myself always wearing is bracelets! But sometimes, they didn’t match my outfits, or I wish I had a certain type of bracelet…and I am always buying evil eye bracelets if I see them when I am shopping, but every time I bought a bracelet, I was always wishing it was a certain way, so I decided to make my own. I designed a bracelet I wanted to wear, made out of beads, and turned it into reality. Surprisingly, I had a lot of compliments on that one bracelet I made, and my friends and co-workers were asking what store I got it from. This gave me the idea to start my own collection. I knew it wasn’t impossible, but it would be a lot of work. I always love a fun challenge, so, I set myself a new goal. This sounds cheesy, but the truth is, I decided to chase my dream. Where this will go? I still have yet to find out!

Me: Tell me about your design process. How do you decide on which pieces to use for your designs?

AA: Truthfully, I don’t have a process when I am designing! If I go somewhere, I see something, I always wonder if it’ll look good if I turned it into a bracelet. I am always curious about everything. Just the other day, I looked at a wine bottle and I wondered if there was a way to turn the cork screws into a bracelet! I research, go shopping for beads, and buy them. When they come in, I play with them, and put pieces together until I love it! I have taken a part a bracelet probably over 50 times just because there was something I didn’t like about it. I just don’t want the bracelets to look good, I want them to be amazing. If I love it, then I know others will too!

Me: Which piece from your collection is your favorite?

AA: I can’t just pick one that is my favorite. Each piece I make has a different story to how I came up with the design, that makes me love each piece for it’s own. Although, I love my evil eye collection, because of the meaning behind ‘evil eyes’, and wearing them for protection. I love the tassel collection, because I remember playing around with string and different colors for hours and trying to tie gold thread around it, until I finally made the perfect tassel.

Me: If you could design a piece for any celebrity or model who would it be, what would you make for them, and why?

AA: I would say either Priyanka Chopra or Kim Kardashian. I would make an evil eye bracelet, because I feel like they believe in the meaning behind it, and would appreciate an evil eye bracelet design that no one else has.

Barnes and Noble Dream Class: Comedy Writer Alida Nugent’s “Crucial Info for Surviving Your 20s”

Alida Nugent

On October 1st, I received an email from the Hofstra Barnes and Noble Bookstore about a Dream Class that students could vote to bring to campus.

Ask me again which courses were available or which one I voted for. I honestly can’t remember, but I do remember claiming my free ticket when I read that we won the BNC127 course “Crucial Info For Surviving Your 20s.”

The first 20 students were able to snag free tickets to the event with speaker Alida Nugent, a 25 year old blogger and comedy writer from Brooklyn, NY. She is the author of Don’t Worry, It Gets Worse and the genius behind the blog The Frenemy.

Alida Nugent had quite the list of tips for us that night.

She’s very serious about helping 20somethings not screw up after college. She told us that one night, as she was typing up a paper with some alcohol in hand, she accidentally spilled it all over her computer causing her to lose all of her files.

So her first tip, of course, was backup your computer.

There were a few other tips that were worth noting from her speech:

1. Throw away some of your clothes after college. When you move into a NYC apartment, half of your clothes won’t fit, and more than half of them are no longer appropriate for your age.

2. Learn how to cook a meal under $10. “Just put sh*t on starch,” she recommends.

3. Get a plant before you get a pet and see if you can take care of it.

4. Keep a list of at least 5 phone numbers in your wallet. (She left her phone and keys in her apartment once, and ended up having to ask her boss to Facebook message her roommate to let her in. “How professional,” she joked).

5. Don’t think that being in your 20s means you can’t still be a kid sometimes. “So eat ice cream for dinner, stay on Facebook all day, and go up to the roof and scream your heart out” if you want to.

20 is just the beginning. Apparently, it gets worse!

Sunshine Award

sunshine-awardI’ve been nominated for yet another award, the Sunshine Award, by teddy on Glipho. Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

Teddy is an awesome blogger with a great sense of humor. Check out his blog on Glipho!

Here are the rules of the award:

1. Post the Sunshine Award logo.
2. Nominate ten of your favorite blogs, the ones you can’t wait to read.
Announce the news on their blog and insert a link back to the Nominator’s Blog.
3. Then answer the 4 questions below in order to get to know each other.

My Favorite Weather: Spring weather! I live in New York, so I get all four seasons. Winter and summer are too extreme for me. Autumn isnt too bad, but there are leaves everywhere and its kind of messy. Spring is just right—50-70°F weather and beautiful flowers in bloom…until June rolls around, that is. My birthday is also in the spring.

My Favorite Social Network: This is a tough one. I’d have to say it’s a tie between Facebook and Twitter. I keep in touch with friends and family on Facebook, and I also spend a lot of time reading celebrity gossip articles from my favorite news organizations on Twitter. I use both to promote my blog.

My Favorite Number: 3, because three is the Trinity. Also because a triangle has three sides and love triangles make for interesting love stories.

What Have I Achieved: I started college at 16 and got my Associates Degree at the age of 18. Not many teenagers can say the same.

And now for my nominations:

Maria Nichol

Laura Cripps

The DownLouw

The Love Hawk

Looking forward to seeing your answers to these questions!

One Lovely Blog Award

lovely blogI’ve been nominated for the One Lovely Blog Award by The Love Hawk on Glipho, another site I share my posts on. Thanks so much! It means a lot to me, especially since I’ve only been on Glipho for two months.

She blogs love advice, so those of you ladies who are looking for help in the romance department, check her out!

Here are the rules of the award:

– Add the “One Lovely Blog Award” image to your post
– Share 7 things about you
– Pass the award to seven nominees
– Thank the person who nominated you
– Inform the nominees by posting on their blogs

So, here are seven things about me:

1. My favorite color is yellow.

2. I am bilingual. I speak Spanish as a second language because I grew up with my Panamanian mom and aunt speaking Spanish around me since I was born.

3. I also want to learn Italian and Portuguese.

4. I really want to visit the Bridge of Sighs in Italy, because as the myth goes, if you kiss someone underneath the bridge you’ll love that person forever.

5. As you can tell from number four, I’m a hopeless romantic.

6. I’m a music junkie. I know so many songs that I have several accounts on different music streaming sites to store them on.

7. I love to write. As an aspiring journalist, I intend to make a living off of writing about celebs and the entertainment world.

I hope you had fun getting to know me!
