65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards

Emmy Award Trophy

Emmy Award Trophy

Last night, television celebrated the best in the business. The Emmys are the most upscale awards show of the year. From the elegant dresses to the sophisticated bow ties, everyone cleans up extremely nicely for the biggest celebration of primetime television. I always enjoy watching the Emmys for its entertainment shock value.

I will begin the recap with the evening’s best dressed:

Best Dressed:

Top to Bottom: Carrie Underwood, Jim Parsons, Stephen Colbert, Alyson Hannigan, Ana Faris

Top to Bottom: Carrie Underwood, Jim Parsons, Stephen Colbert, Alyson Hannigan, Ana Faris

Top to Bottom: Tina Fey, Sofia Vergara, Robin Williams (and wife), Kaley Cuoco, Anna Gunn

Top to Bottom: Tina Fey, Sofia Vergara, Robin Williams (and wife), Kaley Cuoco, Anna Gunn

Tina Fey, 30 Rock: I love the rich royal blue color of this dress and the way it hugs her body. Simply gorgeous.

Robin Williams. The Crazy Ones: Robin Williams looked super dapper in a suit and white tie. It’s refreshing to see at least one man with a different colored tie, as this event is usually a black tie affair.

Sophia Vergara, Modern Family: Sophia Vergara was the Emmys “Lady in Red” this year. Rumor has it she wore Kmart underwear beneath this dress. No lo creo!

Kaley Cuoco, The Big Bang Theory: Kaley Cuoco is rocking this rich plum colored dress! The detailing is fabulous.

Anna Gunn, Breaking Bad: This dress is simply incredible. I would pay good money to wear this to a special event. The lace bodice is just gorgeous!

Carrie Underwood: This one shoulder dress looks great on Carrie. The print on the dress is also a nice touch.

Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory: I just love the bow tie on Jim Parsons. It adds to his science nerd personality!

Stephen Colbert, The Colbert Report: You’ve gotta love this guy. I like the fact that he went with the pocket handkerchief accessory. I didn’t see too many guys with that this year.

Alyson Hannigan, How I Met Your Mother: This purple dress goes perfectly with her red hair. Great choice!

Anna Faris, Mom: I just love the simplicity of this yellow dress. The slit is also very sexy!

The Intro:

The Academy was especially lenient this year with host Neil Patrick Harris. The intro was hilarious.

The show began with Neil Patrick Harris trying to watch all of the primetime shows at once. As he sat in an igloo of television screens, he began to realize that the fictional television characters could see him. Things got critical when the judges from The X Factor and So You Think You Can Dance started to judge him for what he’s doing.

On stage, Harris decided to make a Paula Deen joke, referencing the new series Orange is the New Black. “Because, for Paula Deen,” he began, “orange is the new black. Not soon enough?”

I wonder if Paula Deen was watching…

As if Neil Patrick Harris wasn’t enough, Jimmy Kimmel, Jane Lynch, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan O’Brien also found their way onto the stage.

It got really uncomfortable when Jane Lynch and Neil Patrick Harris started making LGBT jokes.

“I’ll show you how much of a woman I really am. Right now,” Lynch said.

“I don’t think I’d like that very much,” Harris cringed.

“Me neither,” joked Lynch.

Yeah…

Tina Fey and Amy Phoeler sat front row wearing 3D glasses and eating from large bowls of popcorn. When Harris asked what the 3D glasses were for, they said that they wanted to see him up close in case he decided to do a strip tease.

“That would be very degrading,” said Harris.

“No. We’d be very degrateful,” said Phoeler.

Those girls are something else.

And now, for the highlights of the 2013 Emmy Award show.

The Highlights:

1. Nurse Jackie start Merrit Wever’s acceptance speech: “Ok, I gotta go.” (Best acceptance speech ever, according to Neil Patrick Harris)

2. Emily and Zooey Deschanel award presentation: Modern Family‘s “Dad, to gay dad, to old dad.”

3.  Jonathan Winters Tribute by Robin Williams

4. Are John Ham and Alec Baldwin really Neil Patrick Harris’ biological parents?

5. Tony Hale flaunting Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ clutch underneath his arm while on stage.

6. When Neil Patrick Harris said, “Jimmy Kimmel is excited to be presenting this next award with them…I mean her.” (Referring to Sophia Vergara’s boobs)

7. When Jimmy Kimmel said, “Laughter is the best medicine,” and Sophia Vergara countered that by saying, “If you went to the doctor sick and he told you to laugh you could sue him.”

8. How I Met Your Mother “Excessive Hosting Disorder” Skit. Hilarious.

9. Cory Monteith Tribute by Jane Lynch

10. “The Number in the Middle of the Show.” I didn’t know Nathan Fillion and Sarah Silverman could dance!

11. When Diahann Carroll said, “All the men in this room are so beautiful. I’m so happy to be here with all of you!”

12. Jeff Daniel’s Acceptance Speech. He started it off with, “Well crap.”

13. When the microphone kept moving up and down during Jimmy Fallon’s award presentation.

14. The Amazing Choreographers Dance Number. The “Get Lucky” parts were awesome!

15. James Gandolfini Tribute by Edie Falco

Best Performance:

Carrie Underwood’s “Yesterday” Cover

That song is just amazing. Carrie did the song justice.

Sunshine Award

sunshine-awardI’ve been nominated for yet another award, the Sunshine Award, by teddy on Glipho. Thank you so much! I really appreciate it.

Teddy is an awesome blogger with a great sense of humor. Check out his blog on Glipho!

Here are the rules of the award:

1. Post the Sunshine Award logo.
2. Nominate ten of your favorite blogs, the ones you can’t wait to read.
Announce the news on their blog and insert a link back to the Nominator’s Blog.
3. Then answer the 4 questions below in order to get to know each other.

My Favorite Weather: Spring weather! I live in New York, so I get all four seasons. Winter and summer are too extreme for me. Autumn isnt too bad, but there are leaves everywhere and its kind of messy. Spring is just right—50-70°F weather and beautiful flowers in bloom…until June rolls around, that is. My birthday is also in the spring.

My Favorite Social Network: This is a tough one. I’d have to say it’s a tie between Facebook and Twitter. I keep in touch with friends and family on Facebook, and I also spend a lot of time reading celebrity gossip articles from my favorite news organizations on Twitter. I use both to promote my blog.

My Favorite Number: 3, because three is the Trinity. Also because a triangle has three sides and love triangles make for interesting love stories.

What Have I Achieved: I started college at 16 and got my Associates Degree at the age of 18. Not many teenagers can say the same.

And now for my nominations:

One Lovely Blog Award

lovely blogI’ve been nominated for the One Lovely Blog Award by The Love Hawk on Glipho, another site I share my posts on. Thanks so much! It means a lot to me, especially since I’ve only been on Glipho for two months.

She blogs love advice, so those of you ladies who are looking for help in the romance department, check her out!

Here are the rules of the award:

– Add the “One Lovely Blog Award” image to your post

– Pass the award to seven nominees
– Thank the person who nominated you
– Inform the nominees by posting on their blogs

So, here are seven things about me:

1. My favorite color is yellow.

2. I am bilingual. I speak Spanish as a second language because I grew up with my Panamanian mom and aunt speaking Spanish around me since I was born.

3. I also want to learn Italian and Portuguese.

4. I really want to visit the Bridge of Sighs in Italy, because as the myth goes, if you kiss someone underneath the bridge you’ll love that person forever.

5. As you can tell from number four, I’m a hopeless romantic.

6. I’m a music junkie. I know so many songs that I have several accounts on different music streaming sites to store them on.

I’ve Been Nominated for a Liebster Award!

liebster

The very kind Eleanor Croy nominated me for a Liebster Award. She’s pretty cool. Check out her blog: http://randomdorkness.wordpress.com/

So apparently I have to answer these questions. I’m not sure how creative my answers are supposed to be but here we go!

1.  What is the answer to the great question of Life, the Universe, and Everything?

GOD. Really, though. Without Him I would be nothing.

2.  In your opinion, is the climbing hydrangea or the bougainvillea more evil?

The bougainvillea for sure. That thing has thorns! Imagine walking through a very narrow passageway and having to brush against those vines. Scrapes and cuts everywhere!

3.  Can you hula-hoop?

Yes, I can. Haven’t hula-hooped in a while, though.

4.  Even if you could hula-hoop, why the heck would you want to?

It’s great exercise and its a lot of fun!

5.  What’s the magic word?

Whisper.

6.  Rock, paper, scissors, lizard, or Spock?

Scissors. I like to cut things into cool shapes.

7.  What sort of punishment should a blogger be subjected to, who recycles his or her old ideas and just hopes against hope that no one will notice?

Hmm. This is a tough one. Spam, maybe?

8.  If I gave you a bucket of water balloons and let you loose, who would you splosh first, and why?

Mike D, only because I know he’d go along with it!

9.  What is the first thing that pops into your head when you cross your eyes, stick out your tongue, and hop up and down on one foot?

Embarrassment and insanity.

10.  What is your superpower?

Ability to perceive things about people, even people that I’ve only known for a couple of hours. One time I ran into an old friend on the bus and she introduced me to one of her classmates. I realized immediately that he wanted to be more than just her friend by watching them and listening to the things he said to her. Some of my friends actually hate that about me.

11.  Do you have a secret identity?

If by secret identity you mean nom de plume then yes. I have two of them actually. I’ve told a few people about one of them but it was a long time ago. I’m sure they’ve already forgotten it.

And now, for the passing on of this Liebster Award, here are my 11 nominations: (in no particular order)

Emi Feldman: http://emifeldman.wordpress.com/

Samantha: http://samlovesmakeup.wordpress.com/

Amber Qalagari Ugi: http://adayinthenews.wordpress.com/

John Patrick Byrne: http://extreamvalor.wordpress.com/

Who is Oscar Anyway?

dolby theater

Tonight is the night. The night where all of Hollywood’s best actors, directors, producers, technicians and writers gather at the Dolby Theatre in their fancy dresses and bow ties to celebrate the successes of the film industry. The night where we jump for joy in front of our television screens if our favorite actors win the Oscar we hoped they would, and cry if they don’t. The night where that golden statuette is the only thing on the minds of millions of viewers around the globe.

Tonight is Oscars night.

The 85th Annual Academy Award show will air tonight at 8pm EST. I’m sure there will be much ado about it tomorrow as well. Especially since the ever so funny creator of Family Guy, Seth MacFarlane will be hosting.

But today, as sat next to my mother on the bus, I pondered about the 85th Academy Awards, and realized that there was something I longed to know:

Why is that beautiful 24 karat gold statuette named Oscar?!

oscar

So I did some research and here’s what I found:

The statuette, formally known as the Academy Award of Merit, was designed by MGM art director Cedric Gibbons and brought into three dimensions by sculptor George Stanley in 1928. It is the most recognized trophy in the world.

The Academy Award of Merit is a knight atop a film reel clutching a crusader’s sword. It stands 13.5 inches tall and weighs 8.5 pounds. The film reel on which it stands has 5 spokes, each representing a branch of the Academy (actors, directors, producers, technicians, and writers). 2,809 of these statuettes have been presented since the May 1929 Academy Award show. The first person presented with this statuette was Emil Jannings for Best Actor in the films The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh.

This lovely knight came to be known as Oscar when Academy librarian and soon to be executive director Margaret Herrick first saw the statue. She remarked that it looked like her Uncle Oscar. The Academy did not use the term Oscar until 1939, even though Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky referred to the award as such when writing about Katharine Hepburn’s first Best Actress win in 1934.

A few interesting facts about Oscar:

1. He was initially made of gold-plated solid bronze.

2. After a few years the award began to be made of Britannia metal, plated in copper, nickel silver, and lastly, 24-karat gold.

3. The metal shortage during World War II caused the Oscars to be made of painted plaster for three years! Those who received these statuettes made of plaster were asked to come back for the golden Oscar after the shortage.

4. It takes 3-4 weeks to make fifty of these beautiful knights!

Oscar is one heck of a handsome knight. All the finesse about him once a year isn’t enough to understand how successful this statuette has become. Learn more about him here: http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/about/awards/oscar.html

Time for me to go admire Oscar from my flat screen television. For all those nominated, may the odds be ever in your favor!
