I posted this in my story and got so many responses that I wanted to share in feed. Curly hair isn’t just aesthetic, it’s about embracing what’s authentic and refraining from trying to flatten out the confidence of being different. Luckily, so many more women have realized the beauty in being what they were born to be – vibrant, bright, bouncy, and natural. 👩🏾‍🦱 Regardless, when I get my hair cut by a curly hair salon I’m reminded that I spent 10+ years of my life trying to be less than myself by straightening the shit out of my curls and smelling like burnt chicken while working up a huge electricity bill. I felt small, like I was tiptoeing through corporate internships trying to blend in, and planned my life around avoiding humidity and sweating in general. 👩🏾‍🦱 It wasn’t until I blew out the power of my French host mom’s house in Paris back in 2012 that I had no choice but to embrace the mane (with limited product, yikes). I noticed a breakthrough: my personality flourished the more months went by without straight hair. I started filming @damonandjo and have let the hair be as wild as our adventures since, holding nothing back and showing other curly girls that it doesn’t need to be the way they told you it should be – straight. 👩🏾‍🦱 Curly hair sent me a message: don’t try to fit in the mold of beauty, create your own. Thanks @curls.la for making this bounce happen! Also, shout out to @cmonmann who’s always there to be the best hype man 💋
