Yes, that’s Jimmy Kimmel holding a cardboard cutout of the new Beijing headquarters for China’s The People’s Daily.
The building will not be complete until May 2014, but people are already starting to notice it looks like more than just your average building.
The 500-foot building was designed by architecture professor Zhou Qi. His design beat out four others. I wonder why.
When asked about the design, Zhou Qi stated that the building is a reflection of the ancient Chinese philosophy of a round sky and a square earth.
Communist country that China is, they are trying to censor all mockery of this building’s design. On Weibo, the equivalent of Twitter in China, the government ordered that all images of the building be removed.
Even India is poking fun at the design. The Times of India wrote an article about the building, introducing it as “The new 150-meter tall headquarters of the People’s Daily, the main organ of the Communist Party….”
It doesn’t help that The People’s Daily is also known as The Raping People Daily for their false reports that mislead the people. They’re just embracing that nickname with the design of this building!
What myself and others fail to understand is how the men in the room didn’t look down at their pants before approving the building design and feel uncomfortable.
But then again, Asia is known for its controversial architectural designs. There’s the Gate of Orient in China that looks like a pair of underpants, and also the luxury buildings in Seoul, South Korea that look like the 9/11 explosion.
Kimmel did not refrain from making fun of the design on his show Jimmy Kimmel Live as he walked back and forth on the stage holding the cardboard cutout of the building at his crotch.
He even sent someone out to the streets of Hollywood to find out what the building would conjure in the mind of a child.
A kid took one look at the building and said, “Hmmm. That’s hard.”
Enjoy watching Jimmy Kimmel flaunt around the new addition to the backdrop on the set of Jimmy Kimmel Live.
