Last week, I was tagged by Emma over at itsemmaelise.com to list three things I’m grateful for each day for seven days beginning on Thursday, November 20th and ending on the eve of Thanksgiving.

I posted the three things each day on my Facebook profile to keep track. It felt kind of nice to see it all in writing.

Brief Chat With Hofstra’s 2014 Homecoming Queen Hanna Knuuttunen

TV production major Hanna Knuuttunen, 21, was crowned Homecoming Queen at Hofstra’s Fall Festival in September.

Hofstra University’s Homecoming Queen Hanna Knuuttunen is ready to head back to her hometown in Sandown, New Hampshire for the Thanksgiving holiday. The 21-year-old TV production major and drama minor just landed an internship with Sesame Workshop’s Domestic TV Distribution Department, which she’s excited to begin in January 2015.

I got to catch up with Hanna on campus to talk about the Fall Showcase, her post-grad plans and where she keeps that gorgeous crown.

Me: Where are you from?
Hannah Knuuttunen: I’m from Sandown, New Hampshire, a very small New Hampshire town.

Me: What are three words you would use to describe yourself?
HK: Passionate, motivated and genuine.

Me: Are you involved in any campus clubs?
HK: I’m the president of Alpha Phi, and I’m also the president of Sigma’capella, which is a co-ed a capella group. I’m an RA in the Netherlands Hall and I’m in She’s the First.

Me: What did your friends and family say when you told them you were going to be part of the showcase?
HK: They were very excited for me. They were all very supportive as well and super excited to see what I came up with. My mom was constantly calling me and was like “Oh, so did you decide what you’re doing? You need to get it on video to show me!”

Me: Did you think you were going to win? At what point did you feel that you could actually win Homecoming Queen?
HK: I was so nervous the entire time. I had no idea. It was great because I feel like every girl that was up on stage is a leader in so many different things on campus and we’re all so unique. So it could of been any one of us. During the showcase I had such a blast and I had a huge group of friends that came out to support me so that made me feel a little more comfortable. But until the second my name was called I had no clue.

Me: What went through your mind when the crown was being placed on your head?
HK: I just couldn’t stop smiling! It was so exciting. It was President Stuart Rabinowitz that crowned me so I was like ‘This is so cool.’ It’s such an incredible honor to be Homecoming Queen at Hofstra. It’s something that you should really cherish and be honored that it happened to you because it means that you’re involved and you’re respected by not only your peers, but administration. I was happy that everyone was supporting me and it was such a great moment. Definitely one of the best moments so far.

Me: Where do you put the crown when you’re not wearing it?
HK: I have a bookshelf in my room, and one of my residents actually came in and re-did my bookshelf and set my crown and sash. She made a pretty display for it so it’s just sitting on the bookshelf.

Me: What do you like to do for fun?
HK: I love theater. I like singing, dancing and acting. I live for that. Anything to do with performing really. I just love being able to be in front of people and talking to people and making them laugh or whatever it may be. I love writing scripts. Like, one act plays. Not necessarily stories or essays, but I love creating dialogue.

Me: What’s your favorite film?
HK: I love West Side Story. That might be a classic for me.

Me: What are your plans after graduating in May?
HK: I want to travel. I would love to take a year off and just go everywhere I can and not have a set plan. Like, just save up and go to one place and take a plane to the next place and just keep going. It’s gonna be a lot of money. I’d have to save but that would be the dream. I would also love to go to grad school, potentially, or just work in the city.

Me: Who is your female role model?
HK: This is probably so cliché, but definitely my mom. She’s the reason that I’m the person that I am today because every single thing I’ve done, every club, group or rehearsal I’ve had since I was in elementary school, she’s supported me through and she’s been the thing that always keeps me going. If I’m upset about something she’s the one to remind me why I’m here doing what I do and why I can achieve whatever I’m trying to achieve. She is, without a doubt, the reason I have accomplished anything that I’ve accomplished.

Me: What is your life motto?
HK: I actually got this from a fortune cookie once, and I wrote about it in an essay: You can’t have a beautiful ending without making a few beautiful mistakes.

6 Amazing Performances from the #AMAs2014

ABC hosted three hours of non-stop, top-notch entertainment on Sunday evening at the American Music Awards show.

So. Much. Talent!

Every performer did such an amazing job that it was so hard to pick five favorites. So I chose six instead.

As usual, the ladies rocked our socks off with their chart topping hits. The guys did an okay job, but, girl power!

Here are my six favorite AMA 2014 perfomances:

1. Taylor Swift, “Blank Space”

Was that real fire?!

2. Sam Smith, “Only One” ft. ASAP Rocky

This song gets me every time! *sniffles*

3. Lorde, “Yellow Flicker Beat”

That lipstick smudge though!

4. Selena Gomez, “The Heart Wants What it Wants”

So emotional. Props for holding it together, girl.

5. Nicki Minaj ft. Skylar Grey, “Bed of Lies”

Beautiful ballad. Didn’t know she had it in her!

6. Jennifer Lopez “Booty” ft. Iggy Azalea

It wouldn’t have been much of a finale without the booty.

7 Things I Learned After Taking My First Zumba Class

So I finally got to try Zumba this week, and it was great!

I honestly cannot wait to go back. It was that amazing.

Here are a few things general things I learned from taking my first Zumba class with instructor Yenny Barona:

1. People who attend the class rarely dress like this. Actually, no one in the class I went to was dressed like this. Not even the instructor…

2. There’s no practice round. You just watch and do. It’s not as bad as you think, though.

3. It’s nonstop dancing. No breaks. Song after song, you’ve got to keep moving or you’ll miss the steps!

4. You might not dance the Samba during your first session, but you will dance the salsa and merengue.

5. Be prepared to dance to well known hits like “Jump” by Flo Rida and “Booty” by Jennifer Lopez feat. Iggy Azalea. And then you’ll start moving to the choreography you learned every time you hear them thereafter!

6. You will feel SEXY. Major confidence boost!

7. I’m not even sore! Knock on wood. KNOCK. ON. WOOD.

Take me back to Zumba…

Guest Blog: Krystal of BeautyLifeGeek’s Top 5 Anime Picks

Krystal of BeautyLifeGeek brings you her top five anime picks! Enjoy her guest post below.

Hello, my name is Krystal of BeautyLifeGeek.com. I am here to help you tap into your inner geek, and introduce to you my top five anime picks. Keep in mind, these are my personal picks that I enjoy. I want to share my picks with all of you. If you disagree, that’s okay! No harm done! Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and anime preferences.

1. K

K is about a young boy who is framed for murder, due to mistaken identity. His life turns upside down, when he is caught in a war between the seven kings and the HOMRA group. The visuals are amazing, the story line is very interesting, and you have to option to watch this anime is Japanese or English.

2. Sword Art Online

Sword Art Online parts 1 and 2 is an amazing anime, and one of my personal favorites. Sword Art Online follows SOA beta tester Kirito, as his life is literally a video game. The only way to free himself, along with many other players is battle the final boss after 100th floors. You will thoroughly love this anime.

3. Death Note

This is more of a Gothic life or death anime. A death note holds the power to kill the person written in the dark notebook. Light Yagami befriends a strange detective named L, to track down the owner of the death note, while concealing his ownership of the death note.

4. Black Butler

Ciel Phantomhive and his Butler Sebastian solve mysteries under the queen of England’s request. This is another dark anime with humor and cute characters. This is another one of my favorites!

5. Naruto Shippuden

WARNING: If you have not seen the original (first) Naruto, the premise of the storyline will not make any sense to you. Naruto Shippuden follows a grown up Naruto and his friends, as they battle the dark powers developed by Sasuke. Perfect for reliving the moments of Naruto, as the final chapter comes to an end.

CANstruction, “May the odds be ever in your favor”

Who knew food charity could be so creative!

The CANstruction exhibit at Brookfield Place in NYC is a display of can art sculptures created by artists who entered the food charity competition this year. The food charity competition is held every year, and this particular exhibit is open until November 20th.

I was really shocked at how great these were. My favorites are the Hunger Games symbol, the StaTUNA of Liberty (love the word play there) and the NYC subway.

Enjoy some photos of the exhibit below!

Photo Diary: Danceworks Fall 2014 Concert

danceworks cover

Friday, November 7th, was a night of sexy, glamorous Hofstra Danceworks entertainment. The school dance club put on a show for us all at the John C. Adams Playhouse as part of their annual Fall Concert.

I still don’t understand how they pull off such amazing choreography. Some of the members, such Nicole Marinucci, are double majors at Hofstra.

When do they find time to rehearse?!

The program for Friday night included hip-hop, tap, contemporary and more.

I really wish I could have gone to Saturday’s show as well!

Anyway, I took a few photos at the show, so enjoy!

The first number was impeccably "***Flawless."

Lorde’s Birthday Wish and “Yellow Flicker Beat” Music Video

Today, Lorde turned 18!

Gosh, she’s so young.

Wondering what the singer wished for?

Less acne.

About 10 seconds into her big day, Lorde took to her Tumblr page, stating,

it’s midnight, and i’m all of ten seconds into being eighteen. the first thing that came into my head just now is that i thought i would have less acne at eighteen.. some things never change. lol. happy birthday me.

Girl, I feel your pain.

This isn’t the first time Lorde made a public statement about her acne problems.

In a comparison between two photos of the singer taken during a concert performance, Lorde took a stand for her imperfections.

“I find this curious — two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. remember flaws are ok :-)”

Lorde also has no shame in posting photos of her face covered in acne cream. She doesn’t try to hide her acne. She just wishes it weren’t there.

But I’m not gonna lie to you, girl. I’m 20 and I still have acne!

You just keep being you, and your fans see past your acne into your beautiful soul.

It also seems that Lorde likes to give on her birthday rather than receive.

The music video for The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 soundtrack song “Yellow Flicker Beat” is finally here!

Enjoy your day, Lorde!

And for the fans, enjoy her new music video for “Yellow Flicker Beat.”

Album Review: Le Sins ‘Michael’

le sins michael
Chaz Bundick of Toro y Moi decided to put out a new album, Michael, for his side project called Le Sins.

I can’t say I’m completely disappointed with this new sound, but I am no where near satisfied. Nonetheless, there are a few tracks I enjoy from Michael, so much so that they are saved on my Spotify profile.

Here is a track by track review of Michael.

1. Talk About: This track opens the album with a very discordant melody. I began to fear instantly that Le Sins really wasn’t up to my taste.

2. Past: The mysterious synth vibe and ominous vocals really take over in this song, bringing back memories of spooky Halloween nights.

3. Toy: This song features an interesting flute melody. I’m really not used to Chaz Bundick’s use of such instrumentation but I can live with this.

4. Why feat. Nate Salaman: Here is where I started to have faith that this album might not be so bad. “Why” is my fave track on this album. It’s closest to his old style of music. I love how Nate Salman sings “Why do you wanna go there?/ Tell me you need me here.”

5. Bother: I find this track quite funny because the song has an annoying ring to it. I sure won’t bother listening to this one again.

6. Minato: I’m wondering if the title of this song is a  reference to city of Minato in Tokyo? The intro features weird screeching sounds. I wasn’t really into this one.

7. Bellow: This song is also reminiscent of his old sound. It features autotuned vocals, but I’m not too sure if they are Chaz’s…

8. Sticky: A cool set of  synth horns really make this track stand out. The sudden beat change at around 2:30 is worth noting as well.

9. Call: This track baffles me. It’s literally a female voice saying “Oh” repeatedly from start to end. The song has a bit of a party vibe throughout.

10. Drop: The spirit of Halloween comes back to life with this song’s ominous synth chords and fast paced percussion.

11. Do right: The album ends with a very slow chilled vibe. This song’s piano melody is prevalent. He does a sort of discordant arrangement with the piano chords that suits his style well.

Overall, I think Le Sins is an interesting side project for Chaz Bundick. I’m curious to know whether he will ever go back to making music as Toro y Moi. I loved Anything in Return and Michael was a bit of a stray from that old sound I fell in love with when I first started listening to Toro y Moi.

And I’m still left with one burning question: who the hell is Michael?
